How hard is it to go from a 7.3psd to a 460 in a '96 f250 4x4? I don't know the tranny. I am assuming its an auto. This is a good way to get around smog here in California.
you will need a complete doner truck.
engine, trans, motor mounts, trans mount, wiring harness, fuel tanks, fuel lines, emissions lines, vapor recovery tanks and filters, fuel pumps, most likely dash too.
it would probably be easier to just sell the diesel and buy a gas truck.
Um, here in good ol' Kalifornistan, all F250's from 1975 on have to be smogged unless you live in one of a few far-flung counties.
You would have to remove all the diesel emissions hardware and put the gas hardware in, change computers, engine and I believe transmission. I think you might need to change the dash, too. This is a ton of work to do, unless that F250 is so pristine it would warrant a swap.
If you want gas, look around. There are a number of good 460 OBS gassers on Craigslist.

Just sayin'. YMMV. Void where prohibited.

I was always under the impression that 97 and older diesels skirted all smog emissions no matter what county. But maybe I'm just in one of those counties with my 95?

Yeah, I jumped the gun on that. Should have typed 1976 and newer gassers. From DMV website:

So, oil burners get around the rules all around, unless this has been amended and it's not been updated on the website. Even with the corrected info, staying a diesel is still the best option.
Corrected,
