Oh, ok. I know the later models have the Tow/Haul button so I wasn't sure when they started offering that feature. You have a 2003 so I was curious if that model had a different feature than the earlier versions.
While you are window shopping for custom tuning...the PHP PHX chip is less than $300 for a stock or lightly modified truck. Pretty good value IMO... Power Hungry Performance - Phoenix™ Chip
gauges are a must....minnimum Boost, EGT and tranny temp. If you purchase a higher end product like the PHP Hydra or the DP Infinity they will display everything but EGT ( exhaust gas tempeture) unless you install a probe then I believe you can add EGT to those.
As it stands now gauges would help you determine if everything was up to par on your truck. Mine stock with 315's and stock gears(3:73s) did not really "Struggle" to pull the type of weight you are describing and I never had an issue maintaining the speed limit....I suspect you may have some boost leaks or drive pressure leaks in the turbo system holding you back.
where do i look for boost leaks and drive pressure leaks? do i need to mess with the intercooler boots as well? top ones get black from time to time on top of motor
Looking at this "how to" video again, I was under the impression it was not good to add pressure where he does in the video because it pressurizes the engine seals through the doghouse vent. Maybe that's not a problem for a short duration test?
I started to do it this way, but kept hearing leaks that I think were through the crankcase - no bubbles showed up elsewhere. I was hoping to get to the point where I would not hear any more air going into the system, so connecting to the last intake tube to the turbo would bypass the crankcase.

Too much trouble?
If you do not have the CCV routed to atmosphere, then it probably isn't best to connect it to where he shows in the video. In that case you would want to connect it straight to the intake tube connected to the turbo.
However, if your CCV is routed to atmosphere, then the way in the video is completely fine.
Oh, and to the OP. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have regarding our products. I would be happy to help you out.

I am referring to the tube that is directly connected to the turbo's compressor housing. This is past where the CCV enters the intake so you will not pressurize the crankcase when putting air to it.
Sounds good. Let me know if you have any questions.
I'm going to jump in and recommend you get everything up to snuff before ordering a tuner. Sounds like you may have air leaks (intake and/or exhaust) or fuel delivery issues. Not all "canned" tunes are bad. Some are actually pretty good from what I'm told. Here's a pretty good tuner thread. Iirc it got a little shaky there for a couple pages (shocking, I know, we don't all always agree on everything), but resurrected again for the final pages. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...werstroke.html
Again, make sure you're reforming 100% in stock first.
