new jeeps suck. Need proof, try to find the frame. (they are unibody thus cars)
I have had a durango on a lift and been underneath it and they look realy sound. They have a polyurithane skid shield that extends all the way from the front to the tranny then they have a plate there and on the gas tank. They look like a sound truck but i dont know about any of the mechanical (i have never worked on crysler stuff)
I am not a Dodge fan but those SUV'S are ugly in front...
But I saw a preview of the 04's and they are really changing them up alot..They do look better...But I think they have a bad crash rateing....
Engine sludge problems is just nomral with a short time trip.. The engine dont get hot enough to burn the condensation out.. There for water gets the oil a bit steamy, witch inturns makes sludge..
Ex Girlfriend had the sport model. Was a horse owner and rider, with a 2 year old. For all of the driving she did (barn, work, daycare, etc.) 100mi oneway to worketc.
Never had one problem. Just did the regular oil changes and matinence. Gas milage sucked but she knew that going in.
I can say honestly that if you are looking for good gas mileage, don't look at the Durango. I have a 2000 4x2 with the 5.9 loaded with all the bells and whistles and we just finished a 800 mile trip with 90% highway and averaged 16 mpg. That is actually better than when it was new though. It does have plenty of power though, I have never towed more than a few thousand pounds on a utility trailer and it does fine. We did have to have the valvebody replaced in the tranny at 10K. Since then only minor things like a strange whistling noise when it is raining and you are doing 50 mph or better. I am a ford man but I figured I would give you my exp. with a dodge.
One more thing, I have a friend who is a mechanic and he said I would be a fool to buy a grand cherokee, my brother leased one and it only had 20K and he had to replace the front brake rotors and they were not abused. My durango is a lease and we have it till december so hopefully it will do fine till then.

yeah jeeps have terrible breaks.
and yeah they are unibody. fairly tough unibody but still unibody.
the main thing jeep GCs have over most other SUVs are 2 live axles and 4 coils.
if jeep would actualy make an SUV with a real frame (other than the wrangler) and actualy slightly over enginered the parts instead of trying to cut every corner possible (better breaks, beefer axles... like the ford 8.8 or an iron D44) it could be a great product.

IF One is to complain about a vehicle for brake wear, lets please not exclude the Ford Expedition, as 3 sets of brakes, and one set of rotors in 50,000 miles (one set being the origional). They indeed have a brake problem. Especially in WV where there are hills, the brakes are biased to far forward. Premature Brake wear is one of the biggest problems of the EXPY.
Also, drive around an older f150 like my 92. you go through way more than 3 sets of pads in 50000 miles.
As to the stronger axle discussion previously mentined, the ford 8.8 is not known for strength. The 9" is great, and the bigger axles are strong also. Jeep does offer teh DANA 44 as an option for the wrangler. Should be really tough in a light vehicle. Personally, I feel that automakers should build their SUV's more Jeeps.
A relative of mine bought a demo Durango in 1999 with 20k or so miles on it. She used for nothing but a grocery getter. One day while drivin about 45 mph the front right axle snapped in it. Well right after that the rear end went out of it. This vehicle received no offroading abuse whatsover. Thats just what I know.
We just bought a 2000 Durango SLT+ to replace our Grand Cherokee SE. Believe it or not, I think the Jeep rode better. Maybe because of the coils? You'd think with 2 live axles it would ride like crap, but it wasn't bad.
We wanted a little more room for our kids so we went with the Durango. I gotta say the Jeep was a good one. Had 128K on her and never missed a lick. Just normal maintenance. I may miss that Jeep 6 cyl at the gas pump this summer though ?? This Durango only has 20K on it so we'll see how it goes. The 4.7 seems to have plenty of scoot, and it has that nice V-8 sound.
