Any one got any leads on a good engine? advice on used verses rebuilt or ford reman....hoping mike may have one laying around the shop.
My 2000 has 278000 miles on her now, and pulling a trailer daily i'm only getting 6-7 mpg....Am wondering if my compression is so low that I'm not making the horsepower that I need.
was talking to a guy this morning who has a 2000 excursion with 3.73's and 4x4 same as mine and he is getting consistent 17's mpg , of corse without a 16 foot trailoer behind it. the best i get unloaded is 9's on open road his truck only has a little over 75000 miles on it. if i could get my mpgs up to the 10-12's towing i might be able to justify it in fuel savings.
I cant talk about weather a new engine would suit you well or not, but I have a really hard time believing that anyone is getting 17 mpg average out of there V10. My truck is a 2001 with 70k on it and 3.73's. Pulling my trailer I can only get 8 on a good tank, so I don't think your current mileage is that far off pulling a load.
I guess if you start on top of a big long hill and coast a bunch 17 is doable, I run 35s with 430s best ever is 13 but 10 is the norm. 2000 f250 180k and going strong
I would be realllllllly surprised if 17 is what he's getting. Gas receipts with mileage numbers for 3-5 fill ups then I would believe him. But then again maybe he got one of the special v10s that get the above an beyond mileage.
My 2001 with 3.73's and a cap on the back got 16.5-17.1 many times going into Upstate NY with the wife and kids and about 1000lbs of stuff in the bed.
It's possible - but only on long highway trips. He may be relying on the lie-o-meter - and even my brand-new Taurus SHO says it gets 1-2MPG better than hand calculated when I fill it at the same pump week after week after week. I'm only getting 15 in mostly-city driving with the 3.5L ecoboost but the lie-o-meter says 16.5-17
britt, the problem is - how long have you had this truck, and has the mileage steadily gone down over time?
Cleaned the MAF, changed the fuel filter lately? Air in the tires?
Your gearing may be hurting you more than you think - a heavy load, with 3.73's, WILL kill gas mileage. 4.30's would get you better mileage, even though the RPM will be higher, the engine will be under less stress and more than make up for the difference.
Not sure how much gas you can buy for the cost of changing rear (and front?) gears...
I have bought several engines off ebay to go in various vehicles. Yes I know, EBAY??? If you do your research on ebay, most salvage businesses will guarantee the engines to be good. I have not had one issue out of any engine I have purchased and installed. Also, it is hard to beat the pricing and delivery charge vs reman. or a local salvage yard. Not sure about your area though. Now, you have to look/research and when taking delivery, most will charge more if delivered to a residential address. If you have a business or know where you can use a loading dock at a business, shipping is less. Now, I have not purchased nor looked to see how much a v10 is, but it may be worth looking into.
okay like everyone else says 17 no way, My f250 is 2wd and I have the really small tires 235/85r16 the best I ever got was 14 mpg that was going on hwy pretty flat road and between 60 to 65 mph. On average with the truck empty and a mix of city and hwy 12 and if its mostly stop and go 10 mpg. With a load 8 mpg is common. So it doesnt answer your question about purchasing a engine.
All...Thanks for the replies...Art, I've had the truck since about 97000 miles got it in04-05. yes mileage has steadily dropped....originall was getting 13-14 mpg then started dropping into the 10-12 range. when i could get non ethanol i averaged 330 miles per tank. now pulling trailer (i know its a load) averaging 150-170 per tank. running chevron mid grade ...average 1200 to 1400 bucks a month. Im running schaefer oil, recently plug change...new fuel /air filter maf cleaned as well...brakes done caliper slides regreased....any thing i could think of. may try to do a leak down test to check compression for a possible rebuild. Am also running a 5 star tune on truck as well...I know its got a lot of wear on the engine and such....but Ive been told the truck is in very good condition for its age. Was just running it over in my head if it would be financially feasable to do a rebuild or new....can pick up a reman fron dealership for 3600 +- thanks Guys

Reason: addition
I'd have to say that truckfella hit the nail on the head...get a $50 compression tester and find out if you have a compression issue before you spend $4000 - 5000 on a new engine. $1400/month is certainly a lot to spend on gas, but why add the cost of a new engine to that until you know that there is a return on that investment.
I got a new engine on a stand in my garage.............. But i'll sell you the one in my truck and you will still get better mileage than you are now. I know you thought i might sell the new one on the stand. But why spend 4000 on anew engine when you can spend 1500 on an experienced one? I get ten mpg and look at the bed on this thing! Also I get around 9 (ok maybe 8.5) when towing the TT. 30 Footer at 10K. No lie o meter just hand calculations.
