Quick Filter Question

Hey all, its been too long. Ive been traveling with work with no time to access FTE and no time with my truck . To keep this post short, just before the new year before i started traveling i installed the hutch mod on the old girl. I got the Driven Diesel Kit.

My quick question is now with the big Baldwin Filter/water separator, how often should I .........

a. drain the separator and how ? just loosen the nut on the bottom of the filter and let the contents drain out ? Then dose it need to be re primed or purged. This is new for me.

b. Change the baldwin pre-filter

c. change the stk fuel filter.

Thanks guys, I miss fte and only have 3 weeks left till i can take some time to spend with the truck. I got a big list of things todo and will be back on the form posting results asking questions and more.

I have the same filters, as far as how often you should replace filter, really depends how clean your fuel is.my truck only gets about 7000k a year. so I change once per year, and drain a cup of diesel out of the Baldwin filter every four months with engine running, just to check for water.your owners manuel would reccomend filter change intervals but I tailor that to what I find in the filter media when cut apart.

Thanks Crop,
I run 15k to 20k per year. Before doing the hutch mod and adding the pre pump baldwin filter I would change the stk fuel filter every 5k along with oil and oil filter. I know its probably excessive but thats what i do.

Now adding the pre filter I'm wondering how often the stk one should be changed and how often the baldwin pre filter should be changed. Don't want the pre filter to get too restricted and cause the pump to go out due to it clogging up.

As for draining it for water , keeping the truck running will help keep the air out if I'm correct right ? I run one on my transfer tank but having one in line on my truck I'm new to that and don't want to introduce air into my system.

yes, by keeping it running the air will be purged out, while draining moisture, you might cut apart the baldwin pre pump filter for inspection to determine both filter change intervals.I think you could extend your stock filter change intervals, but what you find on the filter media & amount of water that comes out water trap on the baldwin will help you determine whats right for you.

I don't have this set up on my truck (yet) but I had the same set up on my 04.5 dodge, I ran the primary (Baldwin) filter for 30-45k or about a year of driving. I would change the stock and primary filter at the same time but even at that long of intervals my fuel pressure didn't flux a material amount so there probably was some life left in those filters.

I drained the water separator before I would get fuel.
