Did a search but couldn't find anything so forgive if this is redundant post.
I have a '69 Ranger 1/2 Ton LWB with 300-6, Auto. It's shift indicator is off and is in R when lever is in P. So, it never goes in park when stopped. I'm trying to adjust linkage but don't know for sure if the ends pop out of the plastic grommets on either end or how it comes apart to spin the adjuster on the threads. I don't want to pry too hard and break something.
I am assuming, of course, that this is the original style linkage etc.
Don't know if this is a factory install or upgrade. There should be a long slot in the linkage arm near the side of the tranny. You should be able to loosen the nut there and make adjustments.
My '78 Explorer with 400/C6 has the linkage you are talking about... but the '69's is different. It has a plastic grommet on the trans as well as the steering column that the shifter rod attaches through. Up near the top of the rod is a square piece that is threaded onto rod that goes through the steering column piece.
Saxton, My C6 is a upgrade swap, from a 3spd. I learned that the shift arm on the tranny is different from car & truck. The car arm hangs down about 45º and the truck arm runs horizontal along the pan seam, but all the the arms are very similar.
I wonder if someone has cobbled together something using an original 3spd arm? Backyard engineering in this country is something else.
Saxtonj, Did you just install a replacement PRND21 dial? I did on my '68 a few months ago with a Genuine Ford N.O.S part and now have the same problem. I noticed the letters looked different before I installed and didn't think it would be a problem.
I have only had the truck a few months and the shifter was accurate until now. I know the engine has been replaced(came from factory with 240, now has 300) but not sure about trans. I personally have not replaced anything on the truck and I don't have much history on the truck.
