Oil filter

In my 2005 f150 I was using an OEM oil filter as I was told that they have a check valve built in that helps with the longevity of the cam phasers....is this still recommended for a 2012, f150, five liter. My question is more for curiosity rather than trying to save a few nickels. Thx.

Motorcraft Filters as a general rule of thumb are going to be better than 90% of other filters

you should see the havoc caused by running non Motorcraft filters in my 6.0 PSD. The price is right for Motorcraft, and they truly do a better job

I've been running an Amsoil filter since I bought my 09 F150. I haven't had any issues.

What's wrong with Fram filters ? We would like to know what you have against them Please advises there something we should be made aware of? as we have been using them in our other equipment without any problems for several years and have had no problems, we have been using their DG style.

because FRAM filters are CRAP

in the 5.4 3v, they have a anti-drain back valve that fails. this starves the heads during motor startup and causes premature failure of the cams and valve train

in the 6.0 PSD, they are sized incorrectly and let oil bypass the filter completely. Also causes hard start/non start issues due to pressure problems.

same issue for the 4.6 3v as the 5.4 3v

If I could find the link, there was a guy who did a bunch of bench testing using all the major brands. Fram failed or did poorly on every single bench test. Motorcraft did extremely well in all categories. The only other brand filter I'd consider is Wix

you get what you pay for. Fram is crap. Stick with OEM!

In the past Fram has had very questionable build qualities. They were acquired by Rank a few years back and have been improved greatly since then. It'll be a long hard fight, every time I see an orange filter I still cringe. They do also have a premium line of filters IIRC.

None of which is pertinent to the anti drainback valve, that issue went away over 10 years ago with most oil filter makers. They have mostly all had them, that need them, for at least a decade.

Their quality (lack thereof)). It's been a known issue for decades.

Several auto makers have TSBs regarding FRAM oil filters and STRONGLY recommend not using them and/or replacing 'em if found in use - VW, Audi, Mercedes, etc. ... especially high-end turbo' engined vehicles.

An example of the guality issue ... Motorcraft versus FRAM ««« -click-

Motorcraft filters are supposedly made by Purolator, they're a good filter. Another good filter is the NAPA Gold Series, which is made by Wix.

I would stay far away from Fram. I don't know if they've gotten any better, but they used to put out some real garbage.

i strongly encourage you to not just take our word for it, or anyone else on the internet for that matter.

buy a fram, and buy a motorcraft. then cut them open and see what's inside, then decide for yourself. it will cost you 8 bucks at the most, and then you will feel confident in your decision.

that's what i did; since that day, i use motorcraft.

FWIW, the pics in the link posted above are accurate with what i found when i cut them open for myself. the only difference i found was that in true puroilator fashion, there was a string tied around the filter media which is used during construction to retain the media until the end caps are affixed, other than that, it is what is shown.

Yep you are correct they are made by Purolator to Ford specs.

Until I came to FTE in 2008, I used nothing but Fram oil filters and never had any issues. I would use Mobil ! full syn on a 10K mile dump cycle with a fram filter and the filter was changed every 5K miles. I ran several vehicles like this with no issues. However, i never owned a 3-4 valve engine before now.

Since coming here to FTE, I've used MC and purolator filters exclusively. They are everywhere and they are inexpensive. The power of suggestion on the internet can be overwhelming.

I used to swear by Fram filters too and actually thought they had to be better than Motorcraft filters. I never had any issues but after I started hanging out on the internet and reading all the horror stories I switched to Motorcraft and haven't looked back. If I couldn't get a motorcraft then I'd buy the pemium line of Purolater since they are basically the same thing as Motorcraft.
