Ok, so I am in a real bind and need to know what size or the specs are for the dipstick tube but on the side of the pan. When I had my engine out, I had a local shop press in the rear main seal, install new oil pan, and I thought put the dipstick tube nut/assbly on. It was supposed to be ready to drop in. Well, I dropped it in, and it started leaking out the nut about 6 months later. They told me that they never touched that since I had it in the pan when they installed it, and to just try tightening it up. I did, and it worked good til today. It started leaking while I was delivering a load of mulch, do I got back to the shop, tried tightening it up, and it stripped. I now have it off, but all the stealer ships are closed, trying to get back on the road! Hoping I can find something that will work. I have the old one, but threads are pretty screwed up, not sure if I can match up with it.
I don't know the thread size, but it likely won't matter much if the part inside the pan(with the threads on it) is stripped. The pan will have to come off and a new adapter will have to be installed.
Or, you can go this route Strictly Diesel Dipstick Adapter Repair Kit
The threads on the inner part look okay, but the nut is totally toast. Sitting here looking at it trying to figure if they're pipe thread or something else. If I can't figure it ill be checking out that link to Riff Raff. Thanks
Took me a little over an hour. Make sure the bore brush that comes with the kit is all the way down in the adapter tube hole. Any bristles sticking out will bind up the nut when you try to put it back on... and crossthread... bad juju.
Dont use the locktite on the internal oring. Use some lucas assembly lube... it will hold the ring in place... and wont hurt your oil when it mixes...
Use the locktite on the blue gasket and new nut.
I used some lube on the small blue oring too just to help it seat smoother.
Well, no luck in finding one today. I called the dealership 3 minutes before they closed. The closest obe with the nut is about 45 minutes away. I cleaned everything up real good, and I'll be sitting in the dealers parking lot when they open Monday. Right now, my thought is this; the threads on the innard part are a little better than marginal. I'm gonna Permatex the snot out of it Monday, and try to get the new but to catch. If it seems marginal, I'll gonna order that kit from Strictly diesel. I like $300 much better than pulling this engine again. I'm hoping that my oring inside isn't bad, seeing as its only 15 months old. I think the problem is that the nut never had Permatex or threadlike applied so the nut was slowly vibrating loose all the time. At this point I'm hoping to get on the road with it ASAP, even with a leak if need be, until that kit comes. Hopefully it stops leaking with lock tire and a new nut though! I appreciate the help guys! I feel a lot better knowing that worse case scenario, I'm out $300, but no engine pull!
Well, I got the new nut this morning, and sure enough just like you guys said, the inner part had been slightly compressed into an oval from over tightening. I was able to get the nut on, and tighten it very slowly, carefully, and prayerfully. It did not want to go on there! I know I was stripping it as I tightened, but I needed that truck today! Well, with a ton of Permatex slathered on there, it leaks only a tiny bit, so I guess I'm good to go till that kit from Strictly diesel comes in the mail. I'll keep you posted how that goes, but it may be a while if the leak stays as small as it is now. I'd like to wait til my next oil change, since I just did it about 500 miles ago. Thanks again!
Just an update; haven't ordered that kit yet. Every day the leak gets a little smaller and now, with it running, it leaves a spot about the size of a dime after 15 minutes. Not sure why, but I'll take it. One of the guys that works for me jokes that the only time a Gord stops leaking oil is when there's none left in the engine. I think I'll hold off on that kit for now, and hope I don't regret it.
