351M Identification?

How can I tell if the motor I am looking at is a 351M? What is the difference betweem a 351M and any other 351. There is a motor for sale that is advertised as a 351 ford with 65,000 miles (Out of vehicle), that I am considering, to replace my tired 400 in my 79 F250. Before I put any money into it I need to know if it will work in my truck. The motor is at an auction, so I wont be able to take it apart for inspection before purchase...

Thanks
Wrecker

351M Identification?

ok all 335 engines have the water outlet on the block. 8 bolts on valve cover

the intake on a 351M/400 is @ 10.7 inches across

if these match, its either a 351M or a 400, the only real way to tell is the crank part number.

If it's a 351C or M the timing gear housing will be cast as part of the block. A 351W will be an aluminum piece like a 302.

351W has water neck on intake. Exhaust bolt holes run horizontally, like 302.

351C/M water neck is on the block, as previously mentioned; exhaust bolt holes run diagonally.
