Looking for advice....

Reading some of horror stories on here and other forums, I have made myself nervous about buying a 6.4. I gotta believe that the actual percentage of catastrophic failures is low, despite the apparent number of issues I have read about.

My question is, if your budget required buying a truck near the end of its warranty, say 80-100k, would you do it?

To qualify the question, I would be adding an air dog and doing the tuner/egr/Dpf delete and using the truck for light towing (26 bay boat) and 600 mile round trips to hunting camp...

I think the key to these motors are maintenance, maintenance, maintenance..If seller can prove proper maintenance has been performed on regular, schedules which we have learned is 5k on oil and 10k on fuel filters...this would make me feel at ease buying a higher mileage used truck..I would ask ford or look into an extended warranty if you can....It may be 3k +/- but peace of mind is pricless IMO...or at minimum an after market warranty is usually about 2k which is still better than nothing..Good Luck

also that motorcraft oil & fuel filters were used...my truck had 64k on it..I paid 3k for anothr 3 yrs and up to 110,800 miles of coverage so I can sleep at night..

I am a believer that what you read on forums are a small amount of posted problems compared to the 100's of thousand of these motors on the road....Almost a year since I got my truck and I feel much better reading the threads..I know what to look for and what keep extra watch on...There has been some really helpful and informative people on here

Thanks Ding126. Spent a lot of time on the 7.3 forum thinking I would get one, alas they are in short supply and the same money in my area. Just learning about these 6.4s. Clearly maintaince seems to be the key...

I was in your boat. Found my 09 with 65k miles and 2.5 years of warranty left. One month after I had it, I found metal shavings all in my fuel filters. New fuel system under warranty and she was ready to roll. Current mods are DPF/EGR delete with studs and an Airdog 150. Don't think you can go wrong with an Airdog upgrade.

Maintenance is huge. Especially staying on top of cooling system maintenance. If you leave the emissions controls intact, it's even more important.

I agree with the others. Mine (bought new) has been quite reliable. Lots of maintance. But boy when it is time to work she will do it all day long.

Cooling system is one of my questions. The 7.3 guys are putting in a coolant filter and ELC and they are done. I know about the radiator issues in the 6.4, and the worrisome "cavitation" I am reading about, is that why I don't see guys using ELC? Seems like additives and test strips could be eliminated.

You test with strips to keep the chemical balence right. Nitrites.

Caviatation should never be an issue unless you get air in the system.

Keeping the coolant maintained and at the proper level will keep the EGR coolers and all else in check.

Yes radiators anything from 2008 to 2013 at a weak link due to the design. I still have my original with no issues.

The radiator hoses can be another issue. They are sealed by an o-ring. Orginial design has only one o-ring. Now there are two. Updated hoses have white on the ends towards the motor.
