Navigation Screen Dim

I have an '08 with the factory navigation.

The screen keeps getting dimmer and dimmer -- now unusable in bright sunlight.

I'm guessing I'll need to replace the flat panel display; but hate to just take it to Ford and say "fix it" -- (i.e. $$$$).

Any hot tips on how to fix this?

First thought is install an aftermarket head unit. May actually be cheapest route. Sometimes you can find factory replacements on ebay, etc., but I would go aftermarket.

Have you tried to manually adjust the screen brightness?

You know -- I hate to admit it; but I just went into the menu/settings and turned up the brightness a bunch -- and now it's fine.

I guess it just decided to go into some sort of stupid auto dim mode -- and I figured the screen was tango uniform.
