Hey guys I got a 78 F100 2wd Short bed with a 514 BB and C6 trans been working on it for a long time I bought a Tuff Stuff 100 amp 1 wire alternator and bolted it up started the truck and right off the bat the belt went to squealing and smoking and you can see were the rubber it getting cut off the belt was wondering if anybody has had this problem or some ideas of what is causing it. Thanks
I've had similar issues caused by the belt being too fat. This can happen if you get the cheap budget brand belt. I try and stick with Gates. Note that once a belt walks off the pulley, it will never stay on again.
According to an article I read about belts being thrown, the belt's shoulders should ride inside the pulley groove rather than on top of it. Furthermore, the belt should be adjusted such that there is no more than one inch of belt deflection centered between the system's widest span.
I'm guessing Tuff Stuff's pulley is narrower than the OEM pulley groove. Have you measured?
I've swapped out to my old pulley but no difference I reckon I should try and find the old alternator out of the scrap pile and mount it back up and measure everything then bolt new back up and check for any difference in the clearances.

How about placing a long straight edge on the pulley faces to check if they are all on the same plane?
