I am new to the forum and I have a question I am hoping someone can help me with. I have a 2002 F250 4x4 with the 5.4L engine and I have been getting the annoying occasional humming coming from my air intake. From what I understand it most likley might be the IAC valve causing this. My question is this. Is there any way to test the IAC valve? It looks like it is going to be quite a challenge to get to. and so far I am not having any idle issues or start issuses, just the humming. I cleaned the PCV valve and so far no hum but I have only driven it to work and back once. Also can the IAC affect the mpg? this last year my towing MPG has dropped form 9-10 MPG to about 7 MPG. I have increased my load by about 1100 lbs, (2 Quads on the truck) in addition to my 24' travel trailer so I don't know if that will make that much difference. total weight is about 6,000 lbs. Thanks for any help.
The IAC can affect mileage. If it is not closing properly, it would be the same as having a vacuum leak, that is unwanted air would be entering your intake manifold. This will cause a lean condition.
I have never heard of a faulty IAC causing a hum, but I suppose it is possible. I would start by removing and cleaning the IAC, cleaning your MAF sensor, and using about 2 cans of carb cleaner to clean the gunk out of the inside of your intake manifold (the PVC system carries a lot of gunk up there).
Thanks for the input. It was on this forum where I saw that the IAC could cause the hum, apparently it's not that uncommon. I will try your suggestions.

I was going to try what you suggested anyway, but it just looks like a real pain to get the IAC valve out, (no room to get a wrench in). What kind of mpg do you get when towing? I"m around about 7,000lbs fully loaded including passengers and I get about 7mpg. X-Army SGT two tours in Viet Nam as UH-I Crew Chief/doorgunner. Thank You for your service Master Seargent Reford.
i wouldnt use carb cleaner in our motors. I buy Gunk intake cleaner and on the back of the can it explains how to spray it into the intake as the truck is running. Do this once every three to four months because the PVC system lets alot of crap back into the intake system
and your MPG is about spot on for a 5.4 super duty. With my mods in my sig i get about 11-11.5mpg empty around town. Almost 15mpg on the highway empty and when towing i get about 8mpg....
