I have a 2001 Ford Escape 4x4 6cyl. The problem is it wont idle. It will start and immeadiatly stall. If I start it with my foot on the gas it will continue to run but as soon as I left my foot off the pedal the engine dies. THis didnt come on gradual, it was fine one day and like this the next. I have changed the fuel filter.
My bet would be the idle air control valve (IAC). I have had to replace mine twice on my 2001 escape in the 9 years I have owned it. It is right on top of the engine (silver cylinder).
I've just been through something like this with my '05 V-6 Mariner, although not as severe as yours.
It was suggested to me to remove the IAC and clean it with MAF sensor spray cleaner. That did help mine quite a bit and saved - for now - buying a new IAC valve.
Your results may vary, as you might have a completely failed valve instead of just a dirty one. It may be worth a try as a can of the cleaner is only $6 - $7 and the MAF needs periodic cleaning anyway.
Pricing for a new one seemed to be the best at O'Reilly Auto.
We changed ours on Sunday, cranked this morning ,but still had a little rough idle.
Could be the weather , it was around 28 degrees this morning here in Houston.
did anyone use an fuel additive or fuel injector cleaner when they changed theirs ?
The Escape runs a lot better ,but this morning , it still had a little rough ide.

Another poster told me that the injectors are "self-cleaning". That may be true, I don't know. I've not used an additive, I just try to use Chevron whenever the price is right, for whatever that's worth.
I also cleaned the MAF, and at least in my '05 Mariner, the ambient air temp sensor is in the same unit, so it got cleaned at the same time. You might try that next.
Could be plugs, depending on mileage, but most report they are still in good shape at 125K+ miles. If you are well over that on originals, it may be time.

Thanks , we got a full tune up this past spring.
I will try the mass air sensor , the fuel filter was changed 2 weeks ago, it was dirty.
