Can a small crack in a 6.0 head be repaired? The guy that will be checking my heads commented that he would check to see if my cracked head can be repaired. I think he said he would see if he could weld it. Is this a good idea, or is it something that could be problematic down the road?
Oh, a couple of pieces of information to aid in informed response:
This is a 2005 F350 with just over 100K on the engine. The crack is apparently where diesel fuel is entering the coolant as there is a smell of diesel in the degas and a slight oily film on the surface. That is the only sign of a cracked head at this point. They haven't been removed yet for inspection.
You can repair cracked heads, but I would only do it on an otherwise irreplaceable head. I had a crack repaired on a unique race head that had about $5K in porting work done to it. Any head that you can get another one new, or even in the boneyard I wouldn't repair.
Yes a bad injector cup will put diesel in the coolant system. And it can be fixed with the head attached. There is no need to pull the head to replace an injector cup. injector should be pulled, drain the coolant, pressureize the coolant system, and spray soapy water in the injector holes, look for bubbles to see where the leak is.
WOW, this could REALLY change the way I feel about my recent luck. Thanks a bunch for the reply. This info may be a huge help. I'll be hoping for the best on this one.
If your going to try a repair make sure the person has done
this before and has a good results with all of them. The
cups can be replaced but it does take some skill to make
sure it's done right. Not Fast and Sloppy.
That being said I think I would most likely just replace the head.
Okay, sounds like the safe bet is to replace it. Another benefit to that is that I would finally get the arps and upgrade the dummy plugs, stand pipes and stc fitting. Lurking upgrades that have been haunting me for a while...
isolate the bad head using the correct methods of diag, remove the head bench test to confirm then if confirmed cracked thow it in the trash and get a different one.
its cheeper to replace the head then do the job 2x.
