TIRE PRESSURE

I HAVE A 2001 10 CYL EXCURSION with Pirelli Scorpion 265/75R 16 AT tires
Istill can't get a good answer on correct tire Pressures-door plate says 38/45 tire wall says 80psi max. I've seen guys post 55/65 for non towing then maybe 60/70 for towing. Currently my steerings kinda sloppy-inflations were messed up 55-52 front and 50-47 rear- also manual hubbs somehow were in lock pos.Just had ball joints done but mechanic said didnt need alighnment.
Any Ideas? Thanks
Bill in NY

I have two vehicles with load range E tires on them. My Excursion and a 2010 Ram 2500. I run both at 70 PSI. When I bought my EX the pressures were 45 psi. After taking them up to 70, the ride is a little stiffer but I gained almost 2 MPG.

OK DO YOU NOTICE ANY DIFFERENCE IN THE HANDLING. My truck is veering-wont stay center-guess because of the uneven tire pressures right now-which im fixing in about 2 hrs after work

I noticed less body roll when cornering and the stiffer ride. Other than that, no difference in steering. Does it veer just going down the road or when braking? If going down the road, I would check the alignment even though the mechanic says it is not necessary. Especially after doing any front end work to the truck.

Just going down straight highway-Ill see if adj pressures helps-not sure if the hubbs being locked affected it though I saw someone mentioned that here--see below--otherwise ill go someplace else about alighnment

I am assuming you had the front end aligned. If not that could be the problem.
If your truck is a 4X4 make sure the hubs aren't locked.

Try rotateing the tires and see if the steering changes and make sure the air pressure is correct after rotation of tires.
If it steers the same this will elimate the tires as the problem.

I have those tires with 40k on them now and I have been running 55/60 psi but just bumped them up to 65 front and rear because of the wear pattern.

My tires are 80psi max and im running them at 65.... I should go upto 70.... vehicle rides and handles great. When I got my new tires 3 weeks ago the clowns at the tire shop put 40 psi in them, felt like I was riding on 4 flats.... dont listen to the door sticker, they didnt make the tires....

The door sticker works for D rated tires fairly well, but E's need a bit more air.

I run both of my Ex's at 60 front and 65 rear when not loaded or working.
The 2000 has Firestone "Steeltex" tires on it and the 05 has Michelin "LTX M/S 2's on it.

If its veering you my need a new steering gear box, just one more thing to check.

I aired my E rated tires up to 65-70 and guess what, no more memory-steer problems. Now I love my truck even more. No more fighting the low tire pressure memory-steer symptoms, its a pleasure to drive.

I air my tires up using my garage air compressor. I tried the one at the local gas station and that took like 15 minutes a tire... those at the gas station are one similiar to the tiny ones you plug into your cigarette lighter... good for bicycle tires thats about it...

60-65 front
65-70 rear work great for me.
Going down to 50 causes too much grabbing on road seams and general sloppyness, this all before i installed redhead steering box. Just got new tires and am still pleased with the pressures above, considering E-rated tires and the weight of the ex.

with 265/75 16 Es i ran 55psi all around.

winter with 265/75 16 Cs snow tires i run about 30-35psi all around

new 275/55 20 C's i run about 40psi all around.

this works for me, since i dont tow much if anything and want a decent ride.
