It's going to be difficult to get a pro-dodge opinion on a ford site (as it should be ) With that kind of milage a diesel is a no brainer. Stock for Stock the powerstroke makes more power, milage will be about the same, and (I think) Ford has the better tranny. They also ride nicer, look better, and chicks dig 'em.
Well........if Ford put the ISB Cummins in an F-250/F350
But alas they don't and I love my PSD. But if they did it would be in my driveway. Anyway both are great engiens but IMHO the Ford is a better truck wrapped around the powerplant. (please dont shoot me guys but why do you have to buy an F-650 to get the same engine as a dodge 3/4 ton???)
I have a 5.9 cummins in a bus. I really don't like it. I shakes an vibrates so much parts come loose like a harley. Oh yeah it has been in the shop most of this week. It keeps blowing the side cover gasket.
I'm with ya...if Ford put a cummins B in a 250, I'd be all about that. Strange that wolfmanagh's vibrates....straight 6's are inherantly smoother and the cummins 6 has fewer parts, WAY bigger rods and bearings plus longer stroke...which is what it's all about. Bottom line is, given equal load and maintenance, the cummins motor will last longer and pull harder down low. BUT.... and this is big, the cummins comes wrapped in a dodge which is completely unacceptable. The PSD does all I ask of it and the wrapping is much better.
As for manuals... the Dodge NV5600 is very stout and much easier to service than the ZF, but the ZF is equally stout and lighter (aluminum housing vs cast iron for the NV5600.)
Its weird cause we spend more time maintaining the 1 5.9 cummins than we do maintaining the seven psd's and two dt444's along with three 5.4's and one V10. Oh yeah and two chevys with the 350.
The biggest problem we have with the 5.9 is the injectors and the lines. Our fuel mileage in the psd's and the DT444's is far better than the cummins too. Our cummins is the one with the lowest horse power though. I thinks its around 190.
I have driven both a Cummins , and the Powerstroke I drive everyday , and I would say go with the Ford. But , the Cummins sounds allot meaner if you ask me
From my experience and from what I've seen...the guys that REALLY work their trucks go with the Cummins. Everyone else settles for the PSD. I'll readily admit Ford has the better wrapper (although Dodge is closing that gap FAST), but in my humble opinion the Dodge engine and drivetrain will hold up better and longer than any other pickup on the road right now.
And as far as the comment about the Cummins being loud....I haven't heard the new 6.0L but when idling next to a Duramax I could hear the Duramax over my '03 Cummins.
Back a month ago I was looking for a newer truck. I ran across this guy that runs out of southeastern Ohio. He has 6 trucks on hand at all times. He runs them to 200k and sells them. He has ran Dodges sense 94 and has also ran Fords and three Durmaxes. When I was at his shop he had all Dodge 6spd 3500 4x4 quad cab diesels. He runs all over the US no load is too far. The biggest complaint about the fords he had was the injection system. He had a lot of problems with pumps and injectors. His name is Kenith I don't know what the trucking name is.
Haun trucking comes to minde because him and his brothers own it
