I am the highway going about 60 mph. All of a sudden my exhaust note changes (deeper sounding). My RPM do not change but I feels like I am going slower.
With all that, do you press a little harder on the accelerator pedal? Otherwise the deeper sound, indicating working harder would go with a slower road speed and slower rpms. Wonder if someting is intermittently restricting the exhaust. That would give give you symptoms similar to what you describe.
INLINE SIX POWER!
300 Cubic Inches of Low RPM Truck Torque! And twin-I-beams too!
"Drive a stick young man! There'll be time for automatics when you're old and unable."
Very strange. You may do better to post in the exhaust forum. Grasping at straws, what if the pipe on the EGR valve were rotted away and when the valve opens it gets louder and you lose power because it is a leak?
I agree with Tallpaul, however does the outside temp make any difference? I notice a difference when it's extremely hot and humid. Besides fan change, it's noticeable only on highway. Hotter the air the less oxygen in the air, also makes the truck seem sluggish.
Don't know if this is your problem, but my truck will do that when the a/c compressor cycles on and off. I notice it at 70+ mph on the highway: when I hear the compressor clutch "click" the engine note changes and there is either more or less power but the tach needle stays put.
I just replace the egr soleniod. tht might be the problem..
The egr is working now but there is a leak in the piping.
After driving for a couple of days, I notice that I do not have the problem any more..
I notice that my exhaust has a better tone and sounds like most trucks.
I replace the muffler with a gas pack about two years ago. Even after replace the muffler with a gas pack my truck is still so quite. How do I get my truck to be louder ???
What makes the exhaust soundsso quite ? I notice that there is a cat before the muffler. What is the piece that connects the two exhaust pipes together before the cat ? can I remove this ?
Everyone must have a different definition of quiet. I have a '95 with the 300 I6 with stock exhaust. I drilled 10 1/2" holes in the back of the muffler and wrapped a sheet metal shroud around it that sticks out 8 inches (shroud makes it sound crisp vs holes alone sounds like a beater with a bad muffler). I think it sounds great (not race car, but truck sound) and I can just hear it over the radio.
