Napa, Carquest, advance.... do a search and get a part number to cross reference if you go to advance they like to look it up by what engine it has....
also if the axle is jacked up then spin one side if the other side spins the opposite way, or doesnt spin its not a posi, if it spins the same way it should be
I didnt know that a axle came from the factory with a locker. just limited slip or posi what ever you want to call it
So I just ask for a U joint for whatever truck i pull the axel from? or do I specifically tell them I need a conversion U joint from my truck to the d 70? And I think a few of the snow fighter additions did but I was thinking more that i might just luck out and find one that someone had one installed on.
No you wont buy one for that truck. it should be a 1330 to 1350 conversion Joint, hence why i said look it up and go in with a part # or youll blow there mind.
I wasent trying to say they did, and im sorry if something i said makes it sound like that. i was just asking what u joint i needed. Stupid question, but the conversion u joint just has two sets of different size caps? 2 of the fingere fit my driveshaft, and the other two fit the d 70?
Thanks, that helps alot. And it's a mildly built 300 with the np 435 and 33", but soon to be 35s. And it's my dd/tow rig, and my weekend off roader. No sand or rocks around here, just mud, trails, and alot of snow
a lot of parts store guys are fully tarded and you will blow their minds looking for those conversion joints. look for the manager, or ask who there knows how to use the old books for parts if they have them. about the only vehicle they'll have listed that shows the conversion joints as an option is 90's mustangs for some reason. i almost guarantee the first time you ask them to look for that joint they will tell you they don't carry them. they are wrong, they will have a couple in back. trust me.
agreed. as Dan mentioned, most parts counter people are only as smart as the computer in front of them. if the computer does not list it for that vehicle, they do not have it.
i went into an advanced auto store a while ago to get a T-15 head screw driver to repair a truck dash on a job.
the counter dolt asked me "what vehicle"
so i told him 1902 ford model T.
he looked in his computer and said we don't stock parts for something that old.
so i said well just give me that screwdriver behind you that says T-15 on it.
he was still lost, because he did not know how to ring it up since the computer did not recognize a 1902 ford model T.
it took the store manager to sell me a damn torx driver.
i know those jobs don't pay anywhere near enough to get good knowledgeable mechanic type guys for the most part, but it sickens me to death that you can't even teach these kids to use the computer systems to crossreference manufacturer's part numbers. if i have anything that i think may lead to a headache at the parts store i go to halm's auto. they are my "little guy" independent parts store that fully brings it. hell, half the time i can walk in with a random part that i don't even know what it is and they will know what it came from. i miss good service like that.
Should've heard Paul and myself in the VA autozone all hopped up on percocets and booze trying to explain to the pimple faced kid behind the counter that we needed a conversion joint. I wish we had it on video.
the main reason i only deal with NAPA is that my local store is an independently owned franchise that only hired intelligent people. and JIM (the owner) starts his counter men at $16 per hour with health insurance and vacation time after 1 year.
the newest hire has worked there for 12 years, the senior counter man has been there for 28 years.
even the parts runners get $13 per with benefits.
