wonder how much more the diesel weighs, i know them v-10s have allot of plastic.
The 02 7.3 4x4 limited I drive came in at exactly 8000lbs on the feedlot scales. that was without anyone in it and I cant remember how much fuel. Kinda surprised me it was that low...
That seems hard to believe. Here is mine, empty with no occupants and a full tank of fuel:
I've weighed my Excursion 6.0L many times 'empty' save for me and a full tank of fuel. I carry a bag with tow ropes, socket set, etc. that weighs about 50 lb. Depending on some loose tools in the back, the weight is 8050 - 8100. I weigh 185 lb, so a "wet" 6.0L is approximately 7820 - 7870 lb. This number shows the diesel weighs about 500 lb more than the V10. The excess 100 - 150 lb may be in some things I've done to my truck (RAS, V/B springs, coolant filter, etc.) plus in about 60 lb of fluids. The other unknown is the weight difference between a 4 speed automatic and the Torqshift 5 speed.

Just curious, how fast do you drive when you are towing a big trailer? A travel trailer?
I tow my 34' Airstream in the right lane, 55-60 mph. I get decent mileage, and feel like I can react to bad situations faster. What say you?
Just picked up a 6l diesel ex to tow my 30 foot Airstream. Nice to see some 'streamers somewhere other than the AIR forum. Those guys over there don't seem to like "trucks" to tow their Airstreams. Do any of you have real world numbers on fuel economy while towing? Would be nice to have some ball park numbers so that I can plan my next extended trip.
The Air Forums is an interesting place. It's the only site that will congratulate a fellow for towing a 34 foot airstream with a Hensley equipped Fiat 500!
Any who, I tow a heavy 34 triple axle Stream with a light foot.... I do 58-65 and often see 12 from my scan gauge. I see well over 400 miles from a tank and it isn't quite empty. I have the v10 and 4.30 gears. I haul a lot of gear in the ex as well.
The two main things I used to tow on a regular basis was a 25' V nose enclosed snowmobile trailer. Dry weight on the trailer is #3400 , plus tools, gear and 4 sleds so maybe somewhere between #6200-6500. The other thing was a 26' Scarab sport boat. This was on an aluminum trailer and loaded up probably around the same as the snowmobile trailer. For years I towed these with an '01 Dodge/Cummins 2500. The enclosed trailer is set up with load bars, nothing on the boat.
I basically towed the same way I drive other than leaving more room for stopping. If the conditions are good I basically would go with the flow of traffic in the left lane. Anywhere between 70-80mph. There where a few times both those set ups saw triple digits briefly. I know VERY stupid. Now I don't have the boat and rarely tow the enclosed trailer. Since I've owned my X , I've towed maybe 4 or 5 times with it. Being a gasser and myself being older I usually roll around 68-73mph. I'll stick to the right lane as much as possible as well.
Funny story from years ago. I worked with a guy that camped with his family a lot. They towed a large travel trailer with a worn out mid 90's half ton Chevy fan. He always complained about it and would always tell his wife they need a diesel (he loved my Cummins). So one weekend we had taken my friends 31ft offshore powerboat to the other side of the state. Loaded up I'm guessing just shy of #10k. Well at the time I had 315's on the truck so it took some gear out of it. I had to roll 80ish to keep it in the power band. So driving back home 'I remembered passing a van / trailer like they were standing still and didn't think much of it. Well Monday morning at work my coworker asked if I had towed a boat back on Sunday. I said yes, he said he was bitching to his wife about how ****ty the van was towing and would barely keep 55mph and how cool my truck was and that they needed a diesel. He was mid story when we went blowing by at 80 something.
Now that I am older and wiser I don't drive like an idiot. I got lucky all those years that nothing bad happened.
Yup, I remember the absurd stuff I did when I was younger. I'm often surprised to still be here.
I can't believe just how fast some people tow.
Here in MI, during the winter months you see more trucks and trailers heading north snowmobiling then cars. And it seems like 90% of them are rolling 75 + .
I got popped going 82 pulling our rig. I knew i was speeding but was just trying to pass some slower traffic and he was hidding in a turn around that was secluded by trees. I got a ticket for 5 over. Nothing was said about being in the left lane and going over the "trailering" limit.

Lucky you! They could've thrown the book at you on that one.
I'd be guilty of the same thing, especially if there's traffic in front of me preventing from maintaining proper speed to keep the engine and trans happy.
What is the speed limit out there? 82 was close enough to the speed limit that it was written for 5 over? You tow a trailer 82 out here in the seattle area, and you will probably go to jail. Joking of course, but I I've never owned a vehicle that would tow my Airstream 82 MPH. So, I guess we shall see how big my ticket ends up being on the day that I'm trying to make it to a camp site before dark!
