I have a 1982 F250 4x4 automatic with a 302 engine. When hunting season has come and gone this year I will get some body work done. When the body is looking better I will want to replace/rebuild engine. The truck seams to be lacking in power so I was reading about the 351's. Is their a lot of difference in power between the 302 and a 351? If I go with a 351W will I need different motor mounts, torque convertor and also does a long block from somebody like jasper come with the fly wheel. I may try to do the swap myself so I'm leaning towards getting the 302 rebuilt since it would seam easier and cheaper to install. Any advice would be greatly apreciated. Thanks
I would swap to 351w it has a lot more power than a 302. 351w uses the same mounts, bellhousing, torque converter, radiator. You will probably need to modify the exhaust. Most remanufactured engines do not have oil pan, valve covers, intake/exhaust, timing cover, dist, flexplate, etc. You can reuse 302 timing cover, exhaust manifolds, valve covers. The intake manifold, dist, oil pan/pickup tube, dipstick/tube will have to come from a 351w. I would buy a parts truck or a junkyard engine setup for your truck and rebuild it. If your 302 is 28oz imbalance the flexplate will work with 351w. 302 changed from 28oz to 50oz in 82/83 while 351w stayed 28oz.
