Race build question

I tried searching the threads but did not really find anything that related directly to my question. I am in the process of building a new offroad race truck. I have been in a stock class for a couple of years now just using a 79 f150 with a bone stock 351m. I am building a 97 ranger and picked up a 95 5.0 that I am wanting to build. I have rebuilt a few engines with a few bolt ons like intake, carb, exhaust. However, I would like to put together something a little more potent. I am restricted to a max 355ci by class rules. My thought was to build a 331 that can turn some rpms. I would like to have a nice broad power band as well since the use will be somewhat like a road race motor. What I lack in power from a cubic inch disadvantage I plan to make up for with gearing. That's the only way I have been able to be competitive with the 351m. Any help suggestions or personal experience input you guys have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If I could a reliable 400hp 400ft/lbs some where around that area I would be pretty happy. I really don't know what's feasible with a 302 based mill. I'm trying to keep the truck around 3500lbs. I was thinking that would give me a workable power to weight ratio. Of course I wouldn't want to turn down more power if possible, just trying to be somewhat realistic. I also can't use any power adders. The truck will use a C6/np205 combo with a 9in rear. Still undecided on the front end.

If you're building a stroker go all the way to 347 cubic inches there is no good reason not to. Buy a complete forged stroker assembly and take it and the block to your machinist to have it prepped and assembled. Then go buy the best aftermarket heads you can afford, on a budget 180cc RHS irons will produce big power but similarly sized TFS or AFR aluminum heads will too and save some weight. Combine that with an airgap dual plane intake and a 260-270deg advertised roller cam and you'll hit those power goals easily without spinning the motor beyond 5500rpm.
