Front wheel hub help please!!!
I wanted to remove the ABS sensor and grease in through the hole. Well guess who was lucky enough to break the sensor in the hub. So I want to go buy a new one and Autozone is open until 6pm tonight but here's the thing ......
Autozone has 3 Timken hubs in stock for my truck. One is for 2 wheel antilock so I can rule that out.
That leaves 2 choices:
Part 515020 with coarse threads for $176.
Part SP580205 with fine threads for $348.
That's $172 difference per side!!
I threw up a question on the Superduty forum too but I really need this answered asap if anyone can. I've been searching for an answer on google for the last hour + .
One user on thedieselstop.com did post the following:
"Coarse: 14 X 2.0
Fine: 14 X 1.5
The 2.0 and the 1.5 are the distance in mm's between the peaks of the threads which you can measure with a ruler."
So my 2003 6.0 4x4 has the fine threads based upon the rule above. So I would have to pay an extra $172 per side ... or $344 total.
So I'm thinking I'll just buy new lug nuts to fit the coarse thread hub. Does anyone know a reason why switching lug nuts would not work??
Is that coarse/fine thread rule of thumb correct??
Thanks!!!
So you really broke it off in the Unit Bearing NOT the HUB??
Cant you just drill out the ABS Sensor????? and reuse the bearing and replace the ABS sensor

I picked at it with a screwdriver and the part came out.

I panicked a little probably because I wanted to use the truck tomorrow and all the threads I read where folks broke the sensor they all ended up replacing the hub. I thought they must know something I didn't so I thought I was in for an expensive lesson.
I had read where the coarse threads hub was the one guys were buying to replace their hub. So I spoke to the guy at Autozone over the phone and he got both hubs out on the counter and checked the threads for the lug nuts for me. The more expensive one (fine threads) matched the measurements for my 2003 that I gave him. So from that experiment, my 2003 6.0L would require the more expensive part unless I switch lug nuts. And for that kinda money I'm willing to switch my lug nuts for sure.
Anyway, like I mentioned I had been reading of many who break a sensor in the hub becoming sad that they now had to buy a new hub. I figured I'd explore just replacing the sensor and long pigtail because now it was looking like the price of my hub just doubled.
Again, guys are complaining that the sensors are so expensive and almost the price of the new hub that they just go that way anyway and buy the whole hub. Well so far I found that the part number is F81Z 2C204-BB, and I looked at the one on my wheel and it is stamped "Siemens Timken". True, the motorcraft ones are $125 - $160 depending where you buy it. I found that Dorman makes a replacement for that part and it is Dorman 970-021. Amazon has it for $46.46 so that's what I'll be doing when all is said and done.

I should have bought the sensor before I started. I read in one of the descriptions that the sensor 'may' break. I know how Murphys law always visits me so sure enough ... I break one. The passenger side slide out no problems ... go figure??
Also, reading so many threads with so many conflicting pieces of information was very frustrating
