Exhaust manifold change, broken stud removal
If this is a dupe I apologize. Changing exhaust manifolds on my 98 Lariat 4x4 w/4.6 triton,w/ 116k mi., of course only @3 nuts came off/side,3 studs came out w/the nut, the others were already broken, on the pass. side I blew off the nuts w/a torch, since the pass side man. was rotten I cut in between cylinders drop off what I could, the broken studs I put the welder on "D"(HOT!) and welded the studs that were broken, they were broke @ 3 threads in the hole, welded the stud and built it up and out of the hole @ 1/4" or so(enough to get GOOD vice grips on), and turned them out. I also notched the motor mount w/the torch for clearance for the stud there. Driver side was a lot easier, but a couple studs broke and same fix there, tried the weld a nut to the broken stud, but it just didn't get hot and stick to the broken stud and twisted off. if you cut the nuts off and drop the manifold there's plenty to grab w/vice grips or whatever. Hope this helps someone. I just did it today, took a lot of time, but was totally worth it...
