For a while I have noticed up and down play in my steering column. Today I was cleaning the instrument cluster and as I was putting things back together, I noticed metal shavings coming from the inside parts of the steering column. And I can hear it going as I move the column
I am not sure what I need to know about removing the steering wheel (or idiot need to) and replace the worn parts in there. I have never been in the steering column before, I'm not yet sure how it comes apart.
This is for the truck in my signature. E4OD and it doesn't have cruise control.
I forgot to add that the shifter lever on the column could use some work as well. When in a gear, like drive, the lever is loose and it's where it meets the column. Also, there are times when I shift from reverse to drive and it doesn't lock in drive on the column until I move the lever a bit, as if something on the inside with the shifter lever needs replacement
So what you are hearing, seeing, and feeling is the bearings in the column coming apart. Its a known problem and Ford has issued a service bulletin with a kit that has upgraded bearings and a few other parts. The part number is F6AZ-3605-AA and it can be had for about $60. This kit comes with the two new bearings, a new steering wheel bolt, tolerance ring, preload spring, and spacer. It also comes with instructions for disassembly and reassembly of the column.
I would not replace the whole column just because you have a couple bearings going bad. Fix the problem with yours, or at least just take the cover off the column and investigate whats wrong.
RIKIL, the shifter is fine, what you need to replace is the shifter cable, replace it before you break the shifter tube or it breaks and leave you stranded and unable to shift (without getting under the truck), then it will become a pain...
About the column, what you have is a broken steering column bearing, and you can go two routes here:
1) Replace the bearing: Do some research, you'll need to disconnect the Airbag and use a steering wheel extractor, I've been told the harmonic balancer extractor is the same.
2) Replace the column with one from a junkyard, there are several compatible cars (you want a car's column, no one pulled on the steering wheel on those to get on). Personally I don't know what's involved here.
nothing wrong with one from another truck. i was just saying the crown vic car column will work too if you cant find a good truck column.
I must thank you for mentioning this, I went to the yard and all I could find was one from a crown Vic. It's installed and I'll rebuild the other and probably sell it.
hi.
do you know if the f150 column is compatible with
my f350? or any other models?
mine is a 1996 f350 with OD and no airbag...
only thing i wanna add is tilt. thanks!
92 to 97 F350, 92 to 96 F-250, and 97 F-350 HD column will bolt into your truck.
the wiring may be a little different, but the column itself will swap rite in.
I noticed I lost my turn signal cancel. I can turn on my turn signal and if the steering wheel is in the right position, the lever will stay on but I have to turn it off manually after the turn, no matter what direction.
Is this all in the black mechanism that is attached to the turn signal lever or is there something else I'd need to look at?
I did get my column from a Crown Vic and I did have to change the shaft at the back because the other was too short. I do remember taking apart the black mechanism as it NEEDED A GOOD CLEANING.
that i can't help you with, i never had one of the newer columns apart other than to change a multi function switch that burned up.
The steering columns are a hot item at the junk yard. All the trucks have had them removed by someone who looks frequently. Although, I don't think they know the Crown Vic will also fit the truck because I was able to find one and the car had been there a while. Since these are all taken, I haven't been able to find a used black mechanism to test with.
