Hi guys, i'm new to the forum. I've got a 1997 f250 light duty 4x4 with a 5.4 gas engine. I am having a very hard time finding the correct coolant temp sensor for this truck. I know for a fact that the wires, pigtail and gauge are in working order. I verified this by taking a paperclip and grounding the 2 pins on the plug and the gauge goes up, when the paperclip is removed it drops. I've been thru 3 parts store sensors with no luck. None of them test right with my multimeter, and none operate the gauge properly. 2 of them do nothing, and one makes the gauge operate backwards. So far i've tried the bwd WT3058, WT3058p and WT763. I had the parts store order me the motorcraft DY1144 so that i can test it with my multi meter, but it won't be here until Tuesday. The local dealer was of no help whatsoever, all they could manage to tell me is that the sensor i am trying to replace isn't for the gauge (obviously it is). If anyone has personally dealt with this and knows the correct part number for either an aftermarket or oem sensor i would greatly appreciate any help.
I got this taken care of, the local ford dealer couldn't seem to get me a sensor that actually plugged into my pigtail, the ones they tried to sell me had a round plug instead of rectangle. I went to the local salvage yard and pulled a few different ones until i found one that made the gauge move. From there i found out that the gauge also had an intermittent problem with the control board, so i replaced the cluster and have no problems now.
Glad you got it fixed Bryan
I think it is called a coolant temperature sending unit for the gauge
The sensor would be for the pcm
edit.... welcome to the forum
