51 F1 steering column

I am about to order a steering column for my 51 f1. I was wondering if anyone has used a Flaming River column with amustang 2 style front end? The nig question is will the column go right on the ack with the correct u joint or did you need an intermediate shaft? Thank you for any help you can give.

Hope you get a good answer soon. Progress-wise, it seems I am right behind you so I'll be looking at your solution real hard. Just like with the T5 tranny and blazer shifter. good luck.

Its possible that you could put the correct u joints on one shaft to link the column to the rack, but trying to go straight from the column to the rack will be difficult with and engine in the way.

I'm in the middle of this myself now. I just got a Flaming River column with a 1" double D at the end which is the same one I had on my old column. The old one was a junk yard item from a Ford pickup from around the mid seventies. Finally gave up the ghost and I'm in the middle installing my column in my 52 F1. I two u joints and one shaft. I am running a 289 with Sanderson headers. I had to cut a portion of the driver's side engine mount on the bottom to make enough clearance. I'll post pics if you want. I'll be working on it tomorrow.

No problem, I had my head up under there all afternoon today. I'll take some pics tomorrow cause I'd like to finish this install soon. It's easier for me because I'm replacing the late model column similar to an aftermarket column. You are at a point of planning it out. Everyone is very helpful on this site, so you'll get there. What engine are you running? What headers? Also did you order your column yet?

Sorry it took so long to get back to this thread, but I have pics !! I'm not sure how to put text for each pics, so the first is a plate I fabbed to go around the empy spot on the toe board. The other pics are of the clearence problems. I have to carve away the underside of the driver's side engine mount to make room for the linkage. As you can see, I used two u joints, didn't need an intermediate shaft. Also a pic of the 40 Ford repo steering column which fits without an adapter to the Flaming River column. Hope this helps...Dean

I first had my stock column on the 51 set up for the MII front end. I did the bearing support mod to it and it turned out well. Only reason I changed it out was for a safer auto column because I was concerned that my so might bump it into gear. Here is the link starting on post #30
