It seems that every time I put the truck into 4 low, the rear axle locks up. When turning, one tire skips no difference which way I turn. When doing this, I do not have the front hubs locked. Also noticed that when turning in 2wd one tire will spin w/o other locking up. I have spun the tire enough for the L/S to catch, but hasn't. I have heard that the locker was not available until years later. Is this true?
Just LS was offered...Of course open diff...Do you know if you have LS or not? Sounds like it! 4lo shouldn't matter unless someone put an elocker in there.
I am not sure about the L/S. I can not find anything detail specific on the build of the truck. I do see electrical wires that go into the top of the diff. and appear to be factory.
are you sure its not the front axle causing the problem? Even if i have my front hubs unlocked the front turns very hard because of the front drivline turning
No. The rear tires will skip when turning in 4lo. Front hubs unlocked. Does not matter which way I turn, the inside wheel will skip just like the rear axle is locked. Also, when I take it out of 4lo and do not release the tension on the diff, it will stay locked until I stop and back up a few feet. Went to the mountains over easter w/end and had to use 4lo to crawl out of the steep, hard right drive way(Dang near straight up). Did this several times and each time, the inside wheel would skip. At the top of the hill, I would put it back in 2wd. Navigating the turns down the hill, I could tell the rear diff was locked. After backing up a few feet it would release.
After I got home, I did the same thing in the road around the house and each time I put it in 4lo the rear axle locks. Put it in 2wd and both axles are free if I back up a few feet.
Not sure if it was equipped from factory with a locker by special order or not, but it acts just like it has one. When it gets warmer,I will drain and replace both diffs with fluid. Guess I will find out for sure then.

Shouldn't turn hard unless you have a bad ujoint on the front axles.
