4x4 not working, unusual problem?

Ok so this is on an 02 f350 with the shift on the fly. I'm not worried about the vacuum lines right now just trying to get the system to work in general.

I put the truck up on jack stands the other day to plasti dip the wheels, while it was up I wanted to figure out what was going on with the 4wd.

I put it in 4 high while on jack stands, locked the hubs and had no wheel spin on the front at all. The short shaft from the transfer case to the front diff was spinning and I know for sure that the hubs were locked in.

So what is going on here? I can spin the u joints on either side without a problem. My next step maybe to pull off the diff cover to see if everything is good in there but I'm not quite sure.

What do you guys think?

If you have the hubs locked in the manual position, and can watch the drive shaft spin but not either of the axle shafts, then odds are it's something in the diff itself. My bet would be you broke the spider gears, but it is possible you tore the ring/pinion up. YOu can further check this before opening every thing up by checking a few more things. While the hubs are still locked in manual, put the truck in 4wd and tranny in neutral. Hold one hub still, and spin the other and see if you can make the driveshaft turn. Then do the same with the other side.

1- you're plastidipping your wheels? As in the stuff I put on my plier handles? Why would you do that?

2-neither wheel is turning? Or just 1? How are you atempting to make the tires turn? - turning the d-shaft, turning 1 tire or truck in drive? Are you certain your hubs are locked or are in good shape?

it might also be something as simple as a bad hub. lock the hub, and turn the wheel. see if the axle spins. do this on both sides.

1. this is the plasti dip I used.

And this is how they turned out:

The wheels were a bit stained and I have been wanting to try this stuff out.

2. The hubs are locked, the axel does spin with it in 4wd and drive so it looks like its the hubs to me, everything moves right on up to the wheels.

Yea, turns out it was the hubs, both sides to... Can I pull them out and clean them or something just to get by until I can pick up a new set of hubs?

There is no "fixing" locking hubs. It either works or it doesnt
