I may get ran outa town for this.. But why do this? Is there any REAL advantage or just kind of a preventive maintenance thing?
I will have my box off at the end of the month so it would be the perfect time to do it but I need to be convinced first!
I don't think anybody minds questions, but there is a lot of info already out there. Not only is getting air out of the system good, with the tank open you can cut the vent and fill tubes shorter (harpoon mod) and greatly enhance filling the tank. I can easily put 25-26 gallons in mine now by the first click, where before 20-21.
Well sounds like I better look at doing it since I will have the bed off anyway. I fully understand sucking air into fuel lines and the issues with cavitation. Just didn't realize it was such a problem with our trucks.
Did anybody have a known problem that this mod fixed?
Ill run a search for some more info but I don't usually get along to well with the search function on this forum, I want search the forum I'm in and it searches the whole site and gets me nowhere fast.
It's funny, sometimes we have problems we don't know about. The previous owner of my truck swore it had a 24 gallon tank, because he didn't realize the issue of foaming fuel cutting the pump off so early. Mine is 29.
I didn't notice any great difference with the hutch mod itself, but I did find my plastic pick up (aka "the foot") in the bottom. They are notorious for breaking off, and you run out of fuel with 1/4 of a tank left. Also the screens in the mixing chamber get really dirty and sometimes stopped up.
BigBlueIron, my wife ran out of fuel at 1/8 tank last month due to the pickup foot disintegrating in the tank and falling off the assembly. Also, the screens in the tank had picked up a bunch of crap over the years, and there is no way to clean them without taking the tank down or lifting the bed. My truck purrrrs like a kitten now at idle after the Hutch mod. In the stock setup, the returning fuel is dumped back in the tank at the same place the pickup foot/tube is sucking new fuel up and into the HP pump. The hutch mod redirects the returning fuel and air bubbles over a foot away to another part of the tank.
Along with the FRx, this mod will quieten down your idle A LOT. I like having the fuel/water separator right under the driver's side door with the pump, as well. VERY easy to get to and drain/change.

I like the idea of a true water separator on my truck but the I worry that it would gel easier. Have fought hundreds and hundreds of those exact types of filters on big rigs they just kind of hang out there in the middle of nowhere and nothing to protect them from road spray or ice. Just a thought

The alternative is us an inline filter, like what Diesel Innovations uses in their kit.

Certainly valid concerns. I just don't have to worry about it down here in Central Texas (thank goodness!). You can stick with an in tank screen like DI sells, but the most important thing about all this is that the fuel pickup assemblies Ford installed on these trucks have expired/are falling apart and need to be replaced.
This is my filter. I was in in Wisconsin with my truck parked for three days in the teens and the last day it was -9 the truck started fine,"plugged in 6hrs" and my fuel did not gell with the big filter I have. I have no fuel bowl heater either. Any colder I couldnt tell you? As said already if you are worried about gelling with the big filter, the DI/Napa type filter is fine.
Ok I'm convinced enough I ordered a kit from strictly diesel but since I will be using the large water separator/filter do I still need the screen they also offer? or do I use my stock one or do I need one at all!
The screens are the in white piece. You remove them.

After
The large black pickup screen in the bottom photo I assume that is the original one from the truck. Just wondering if I should order the new one from strictly or if I can reuse my old one or none at all. The separator will catch any bad stuff. Just thinking maybe it would keep me from haveing to pull the tank in the future just to clean the bottom side of that screen.
Also I'm not sure I like the idea of the return line sticking out a foot unsupported seems like vibration could cause some problems down the road
