I downsized to a 2010 Navigator L. It's pretty...a little too pretty for my taste, but the wife loves it. The diesel maintenance was really starting to wear on me and I saw lots of dollar signs in my near future on repairs.
My wife calls it Pearl, but I like Moby. LOL! Lots of cool toys to play with, but I'm missing being able to see out the rear view mirror with all the kids in and the DVD playing...just not there. Anyhow, I'm just moving back over to the Navigator section again. See ya around the forums!
Good luck man. I'm shopping around myself. Had enough of the Excursion to last a lifetime. The gasser kills you in fuel while the diesel nails you in maintenance. I'm going used and Japanese.

You mean like the 5.4 V8s with the cam phasers that sound like diesels on the ~06 models?
I'm really wanting to get rid of both my wife's Town & Country and the Excursion and just have one vehicle. Like a 1/2 ton crew cab truck so I still have 5 seat belts and have a bed to throw dirt/lumber in when needed. The price range I would be in puts me right in the middle of the problem listed above.
Until then, I've decided to fix up the Excursion a little, (ball joints, tie rods, new springs, body work to damaged fender) and then just put my wife back in it and sell her van.
Last time I filled up the Excursion was Feb 3 and I've only driven it 125 miles since then. My wife only goes out 1-2 times per week also.

You can always go with the 4.6L engine. You lose a little bit power-wise, but depending on how much dirt/lumber you were hoping to lug around, you'd still be ok.
I have a 09 f150 with the 5·4. It's a very solid truck with a nice size cab in the four door model. Tows like a champ. If you look you find them in the upper teens now. The 09 was the first year of the current updated body and first year with 6 speed auto.

we have a '04 lariat super crew 5.4 since new with 69k miles now, no noises, no ticks nothing...is it luck? i have read alot about it on the forums but not ran into it hardly at all talking to other ford owners locally.

I heard one pulling into the Home Depot parking lot a couple if days ago that sounded like it was going to blow up.
Saw a couple if stories here on FTE about them with just a little looking. Also have a buddy still in the used car business. He warned me about them too. Have also heard about it from the mechanic that works on the railroad trucks. Of course he tried to tell me the 5.4 in my 04 F-350 work truck was a 3 valve engine. I had to set him straight.

And 69k miles ain't very many. Most of the trouble ones that I've heard about have over 100,000 miles.
Had three Expeditions, one Supercrew, one SD pickup (diesel), four Mustangs, two Broncos, two Excursions and I'm sure I've forgotten one or two. Know all about them. When you really dig into used cars with some miles, the Fords and Chevys tend to turn to real money pits. Not to say the Japanese models are safe from that but when you do some researching, you find some models just do better than others.
If I didn't have to pull trailers I would have a honda ridgeline. Honestly american vehicles are behind when it comes to technology, longevity, and many other things, they are all playing catch up all the time and do it subpar.
My DD is a honda civic, the wifes is a honda odyssey, and everyone that asks me what vehicle to get I say honda. The ones that do listen tell me thank you after owning one for awhile. No joke.
