No Brakes!!

Hi everyone, been a while since I've been on.
I went to take my truck for a spin just now pulled out put my foot on the brake pedal & it sank straight to the floor and at 5mph took 20 yards to stop, just a smidgen of pressure at the bottom.

I took the cover off the M/C to check level and the smaller portion of the unit at the front was empty but wet! the larger rear portion was full, looking at the gasket the rear section says fluid & nothing on the front, I've looked at all the pipes & connections front to rear & can't see any obvious leaks, any ideas??

She's a '72 F250 with power discs upfront with 2 pistons per caliper

Thanks for the help
Rich..

Obviously there's a leak in the rear system. Wheel cylinder is my best guess.

have had another look and can't see any signs of leaks from the rear drums, I'm guessing that if the wheel cylinders were leaking there would be staining on the drum or signs of brake fluid splashing on the wheel?? where is the proportioning valve/block located on this truck?? also found where the rear flexible hose goes into the block on the rear axle there is another length of flex hose that comes from the block and is cable tied on the chassis???? also found several areas that need attention due to rust!! damn

Valve is located on the drivers side inside fender just above the frame. You have to get under to see it.

The extra hose cable tied to the chassis is the vent hose for the rear axle. It lets pressure, swirl, etc vent from inside the axle. Cable tied to a high point on the chassis to keep out road dust and water.

Master Cylinder probably went out.

Thanks Jefffafa, Alex.

67-F100.. If the master cylinder has gone where did all the fluid go??? is there any possibility it's leaked into the booster??

Refill it and test drive it in the yard or around the block. You didn't say how long it had sat. Once you get it full, bled, and checked you should find your source.

I think as inexpensive as MCs are I'd replace it anyways.

Hi Jowilker,
I use the truck every weekend and occasionally through the week, my 12 year old son has already told me he wants 1 so when I have him over I take him out.. I've got a friend coming over to help me bleed the system so will keep you all updated.. also not so cheap once I've factored in shipping to the UK, import duties & tax

ok update for today, out some fluid into the front empty reservoir on the M/C pumped the pedal to burp the air out & the pedal went stiff, put the cover back on & went around the block and all was good!!
now questions about the M/C. why are there 2 reservoirs? the one closest to the booster is oval while the front one is D shaped.. the oval one has "fluid side" on the gasket. but the level hasn't changed, the D shaped one is where the air burped up from... does one reservoir do the front brakes & the other the rear??
any info to clear this up would be greatly appreciated, I know that I'm going to have to slowly replace the lot.
Thanks
Rich

one chamber is for the front breaks and the other is for the rear brakes.
The "fluid side" on the gasket is just so you don't have it upside down.

ok cool, seems obvious now!! so I need to get underneath and track where the lines go to work out which is which then I've narrowed down where the problem lies!
if I'm only losing fluid from 1 reservoir then my M/C should be fine??

Thanks for all the advice guys

Nope. It can still be the MC

The larger reservoir feeds the disc brakes, as they require more fluid volume to operate. The smaller reservoir feeds the drum brakes, as the wheel cylinders do not require the fluid volume that the disc brake calipers do. Make sure that the large reservoir is, in fact, feeding the front brakes. If someone accidentally connected the small reservoir to the front brakes, you are not leaking fluid, it's just that the small reservoir cannot meet the fluid demand of the disc brake calipers. When I put discs on the front of my '69 F250, I had to have the brake lines crossed so that the rear (large) reservoir was feeding the front brakes.
If someone has worked on your brake system, they may have accidentally gotten the lines hooked up wrong. Just something to check.
