So I get in my X today and she fires right up as usual... Then the battery light started blinking then stayed on... Then I hear a click and all my stock gauges go out my window and lock switches don't work and my radio doesn't work... Battery light stays on and all signals work as do the mirrors and everything else... I turn the truck off then back on it all comes back on.. 15-20 seconds later I hear the click and all the same stuff is off again.... No seemingly applicable fuses are blown... And the behavior is repeatable... Ideas?
Well, I used my AE to reset all the codes, of course i didnt write them all down cause i figured theyd come back if they applied to what was going on now, but now, everything is staying on but battery light is staying on too. I'll be driving to work tomorrow so we will see if the gauges go off again, also, I think ill stop and get the alternator tested for ****s and giggles. I believe one of the codes was battery voltage high and another one battery voltage low, but since clearing the codes even though the battery light is on its not throwing a code now. Ill scan it again tomorrow night after i put 25 miles on it. By the way both batteries are brand new. Anymore ideas are welcome.
Any good source pictures for all the grounding locations?
Alldata or a similar source . I have Mitchell . The good ones cost . You can get Alldata online from Auto Zone I think . Do a few searches on wiring diagrams for your truck . Maybe free is out there . ... But I would ck at battery , radiator support , fender area , and behind both kick panels . Those ground locations give lots of issues . Looks good does not mean good . Ohm them out to be sure .
Oh , Ck GEM Mod connectors also . Ck for codes and comm. It may be listed as Body controll mod. Gem mod. Ect . And pay close attention for water intrusion at the mod. and grounds at kick panel .
So I hooked up my AE to watch my voltage while I drive and what I found is when I accelerate my voltage spikes to 16 volts... When I let off the gas and don't push the gas and just let it roll the voltage drops to 14ish and everything comes back on... Is this a voltage regulator problem? What controls how much voltage comes into the cab? Also where is the cvtage regulator located on these trucks?

Alternator is bad, voltage regulator is inside it. Don't run it anymore until you replace it or you'll begin frying things due to high voltage.
In my experience the battery light is a signal that the alternator is not supplying sufficient power to operate the vehicle. Go get the Alternator tested ASAP!
Every time this has happened I was slow to act and had dead truck issues.
Check the wiring in the steering column. Many people have had exposed worn wires shortening out things you describe. Usually, it's the Overdrive switch wiring that gets exposed from wear, tear and movement.
