Went to a local junkyard today to get some stakes off an early model 80's Ford stakeside for the stakes for my 70 flatbed. I didn't want the racks just the stakes or posts that go in the stake pockets. There were two that were not rotted too badly but they were on 2 different racks. I got them off, put them in my truck, brought the owner out to look at them. He looked at them and hemmed and hawed. I offered him $5. He didn't flinch. He kept hemming and hawing and said $25. I said I don't want to pay that much for 2 stakes. He said well I am looking at the hardware too. I said I can go buy a 2x4 and make my own. He didn't budge so I said where do you want them, here or back at the truck. I took them back to the truck as I didn't want to tick him off as I might need more stuff from his yard.
I just got back from the lumber yard. I bought a 2x4x8 untreated for $3.28.
I have found the best thing to do is stop in and tell the folks what I'm looking for to begin with, if they start quoting me out of line prices I tell them I will go on down the road to their competition and the quotes always seem to drop back into the world of reality.
I never hesitate to remind them that their not really running an automotive recycling centers,,,yada, yada,, it's s flippin Junk yard and if I don't buy it, it will never earn them a dime.
At least the guy was willing to sell you the.parts. There's a well known yard in upper WI whose owner asks you want you think the part is worth and when you tell him he answers, "Its worth three times as much, they don't make them any more.". And then won't sell you part.
I'm looking forward to seeing pics of your stakes and hearing about the fabrication. Great addition to the knowledge base here.
Here is what I have done so far:
Before:
With the new stakes:
<a href="http://s1146.photobucket.com/user/abestauffer/media/ford%20trucks/newstakesa_zps733ef302.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o536/abestauffer/ford%20trucks/newstakesa_zps733ef302.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo newstakesa_zps733ef302.jpg"/></a>
Now I have to paint the areas that were covered up by the heavy steel board holders the PO had put on and paint the stakes and boards beige and repaint the headboard. I want to make one more board, either another 2x8 or a 1x10 but make it only 6 feet long to go halfway back the bed. That should be high enough for anything I haul in the 8x12 foot bed.
Went to the local lumber yard and bought a 1x10x12 today and made my final board for my flatbed. As I said earlier this should be high enough for anything I haul. What do you think? If it ever warms up here I got to paint the boards.
