update on pinging

Well, mechanic bumped up timing to almost 14, and much less pinging. Was also having an issue in general driving at say a constant 45 MPH the truck would start bucking. Giving it some gas would stop the bucking. FWIW, the bucking at 45 MPH is not the torque converter sticky issue that affects F150s. I did have that issue on my last F150 and different. So, that shuddering at 45 MPH seems to have been fixed also.

ugh, still some surging/bucking

Ugh, still some surging/bucking when driving at a constant speed. Giving it a little gas resolves issue. What the heck is wrong? I've given the mechanic some time to resolve this, but not sure he knows what is wrong.

Check to make sure that you don't have plug wires touching each other or running to close together. The high voltage can induce current in another wire running to close to it.

Did you ask your mechanic if he did indeed pull the spout when he adjusted the timing?

What kind of plugs were used?
what brand of wires?

Increasing the timing and getting less pinging doesn't make any sense.

Yep!!! It would "NORMALLY" be, increase timing = increase pinging.

I would suggest a MORE knowledgeable mechanic!!

First time I ever adjusted my timing, I turned the dist the wrong way and severely retarded the timing. I corrected this mistake seconds later, but I will say the motor sounded very creepy being that far retarded.

What's the current gapping of those spark-plugs? the stock should be 0.042 - 0.045, advancing the timing should benefit from a 0.055 gapping.

Is this a ASE certified mechanic or certified shadetree mechanic? Advancing a correctly tuned ignition will yield good results OR to far advanced will result in pinging. What plugs were used? Platinum or copper? Does this mechanic work on Chevy or Ford more? I dont think he's got a clue for this year truck. Either there's to much carbon in the cylinder or need to find a different mechanic.

Update on truck pinging/not running right

Well, I happened to be giving a mechanic(a really good, certified one!) a ride in my truck and within 30 seconds he said "you're truck is misfiring a little". I told him about tuneup and timing issues etc. He said to take it to a certified Ford Mechanic, so I went to dealer and I know, I paid up the A$$ for the diagnostic costs and the labor, but my truck now runs great!!! The TPS, ignition module and stator(distributor installation) were all issues. No pinging, no bucking or hesitation, just runs great.

Glad to see a follow up on this one. I had been waiting to see what the culprit ended up being.
