Cruise Control?

I thought I posted this yesterday, but can't find it. Has anyone put a cruise control kit on your bump, or any other old hot rod? I've look online at Summit and JC Whitney, nothing. What would work?

I've seen reference in the past on the net (maybe even here!) about 1978 and 1979 dent systems going right in. Get the correct steering column, steering wheel, wiring, servo, module, and some kind of brake pedal dump switch off a donor truck. On the steering column you have to match up power or manual steering and 4x2 or 4x4. The factory switches in the steering wheel actually go down through the horn curcuit. So you have to have a good horn relay.

Whatever happened to the old "add-on" cruise controls? I put one on a '77 Dodge van 35 years ago for the princely sum of $125.

Blueoval, I would think that about every vehicle now comes with it installed, that demand has gone away. The old supply & demand thang.

Have you checked on Ebay?

No, John, I haven't. I guess you're right though about supply and demand. But holy cow, look at how many old hot rods there are out there. I would think there is some demand. We do the Hot Rod Power Tour and last year there were around 5,000 vehicles registered. Not all of them did the long haul, but still, there were something like 2500-3000 rolled into Texas on the last day. No Cruise Control? I think there is an opportunity out there. I'm too old and retired to persue it, but I'd be a buyer if YOU want to start something

They had this one listed on the Summit Racing site but when I put in the application, it said it wouldn't work. Looks okay to me. Kind of pricey, but beggars can't be picky. Thanks.

I'd say sit tight, I bet someone will be along shortly with one that will work like a charm.

Get the correct steering column, steering wheel, wiring, servo, module, and some kind of brake pedal dump switch off a donor truck.

On the steering column you have to match up power or manual steering and 4x2 or 4x4. The factory switches in the steering wheel actually go down through the horn circuit. So you have to have a good horn relay.
Speed (cruise) Control (S/C) introduced in 1975 F100/350's, same parts thru 1977. The steering wheel, horn pad and T/S switch are specific to S/C

1978/79 F100/350's & Bronco's with S/C use different parts. The F100/350's steering column/steering wheel/T/S switch is different than 1973/77.

Some of the 1978/79's with S/C also have a tilt wheel. 1978/79's without S/C do not have a horn relay. Horn relay with S/C only, plugs into the amplifier (module) which is located adjacent to the fuse panel.

No such thing as a dump switch. Servo includes a chain that connects to carb linkage. Step on the brake, servo kicks the S/C off. Then when starting out again, press the 'resume' button on the S/C switch.

Ford offered dealer installed S/C for 1975/79's. The controls are located on the T/S handle, the servo/amplifier/wiring and etc are different than with factory installed S/C

If 1978/79's have the optional 3 spoke "Sport" steering wheel, factory installed S/C control was not available. If people wanted S/C, their only choice was the dealer installed kit.

Guys, go check your local pink-n-pull or what ever is in your area. Most ALL chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth used the same cruise control and they are VERY simple. So parts are many. I have been running one for more than 20 yrs. Pop the hood on one of these cars and look right in front of the brake booster. Speedo cable goes into this unit and from there it goes to the trany. I even used the short donner speedo cable from the speedo to the unit. Also grab the vacuum pod with the throttle cable attached to it. One more thing you need is the turn signal arm that has the cruise controls on it. All this stuff can be mounted on your slick, OR just about any vehicle. There is NO memory unit besides the one the speedo cable mounts to. If you check out how these items are hooked up, you will see how easy it will be to install a cruise control system to your slick. OR NOT........ You don't need to tell anyone it can off a Dodge. ;0)

There's another way that's much simpler, a self contained 'throttle kit' (C4AZ-9B742-A) that FoMoCo offered for 60's cars/light trucks.

Bolts under the dash, has a cable that attaches to accelerator linkage, another that attaches to brake pedal.

When you reach a desired speed, pull the ****. When you step on the brake pedal, it disconnects the throttle.

Member contacted me, was aware of this kit, wanted one. I found it NOS, he installed it on his '70's High Boy.

I don't know if it could be made to work, but the bigger trucks (F-600ish) had this same type of cable system well into the '80's.

Just curious. An old Air Force buddy I was stationery overseas lives there now, originally from Roxboro. He's an old gearhead that's going to meet us in Memphis on the Hot Rod Power Tour.
