There is a metal box on the driverside inner fender that is about a 4" by 4" square and has 3 or 4 fins on the right side of the box. Would this be the duraspark box? I have not touched the distributor.
Yep that's It duraspark .. Does the wiring lead to the distributor?
No it does not, it goes back to the wiring harness below and under the break booster.
That's good as long as it's connected it makes it's way to the right spot some times you can have a bad duraspark box on the fender well and they may have switched to the distributor they had (points) .. Just verifying you have a hooked up duraspark ..
Yup it's connected, is it possible to check the duraspark box?
The box can leave you stranded .. That being said buy a new one put it in and test if that was the problem buy another and take it with you where ever you go and toss the old one .. If it wasn't it take the old one with you where ever you go ..
Oh no, no. Bad points certainly can, but I was referring to NumberDummy's the Duraspark ignition module's tendency to temporary crap out when it gets hot and is on its way out. In either case, the OP is having cranking problems, which have nothing to do with the ignition system.
More than likely, the starter is bad. Cables could also be bad. Perform a starter circuit voltage drop test to rule out connection and cable problems.
I agree with this post, it is most likely the starter. I would check the battery and starter solenoid first however it sounds like the brushes are worn in the starter and are not making a good contact.
