Well, a good synthetic oil sure helps. Is this a 4.6 or 5.4 engine ? the 5.4s are known to have a ticking noise, but if it sounds excessive, it could be an exhaust leak around the headers or so. I have a 2006 Expy EB, my ticking noise was caused by a totally lose spark plug on the far inside part of the engine , driver's side. Yes it is the hardest one to get to , no wonder it was totally lose.
I had the ticking in my '03 5.4 at around 215,000 miles. After talking to my mechanic, we put most of a can of Seafoam in the crankcase and let it sit and idle 4 to 6 hours. Then changed the oil. Added a little Seafoam to he new oil and drove it home. Ticking was gone before I got home, which was about 40 miles. We changed the oil again in about a week. Since then just regular oil changes and 35,000 more miles with no ticking.

The use of synthetic oil also helps keep the engine clean inside. Synthetic oil does not create sludge and varnish deposits like conventional oil does.

I run a motorcraft blend in my 05 F150. I should think about that in my expy. It has 232,000 miles on it. on the 97 I keep a 3000 mile oil change interval. I run 5K on my 05 with 174,000 miles.
You're wasting money. Ford recommends an oil and filter change every 5K miles on the 97 Expedition. This means you've done 77 oil changes when only 46 needed to have been done. That's 31 unnecessary oil changes at an average of $25 a pop, or $775 of wasted money over the 232K miles the truck has been driven.

That may be. However, with no more miles then I put on it any more, it sits more than it moves, the miles off road or on dusty roads, the 3K seems prudent in my instance. My goal is to get 300K out of that engine.
