The 3G alternator started appearing in trucks around 1993 IIRC.
That's a good "ballpark" date but it definitely varies by application. You would think it might be the same for a given engine, but that's not even true. I submit as evidence the '92 E-series 4.9 van which first got the 3G starting in '92 but the F-series 4.9 truck didn't get it until '95 I believe.

not to be a ***** or anything just pointing out that my mid to late 94 has one
Notice above that the first two alternators pictured have four holes between the pairs of ribs on the front. They are also smaller in diameter. (135mm vs 148mm)
Four holes= 95A
Two holes= 130A (not likely to be found on trucks, because no electric fan)
If your alternator has a fan on the front it is a 2nd Generation.
If it looks like the ones above it is a 3G.
