Well I spent most of the afternoon trying to "stick" the distributor in my rebuild. It's a remanufactured, I ended having to clean up the casting in order to get it that last 1/4" or so. When I finally got it seated the rotor is setting between #1 and #8. For the life of me I cannot get the distributor to fully seat except in that position. I'm I a tooth off either way? The vacuum canister is pointing straight off the motor and #1 is at about 1 o'clock, thats the way it was on my old motor. Everything at TDC but I cannot get that rotor to directly hit #1 distributor tower. Any help appreciated, I'm on a beer break as of now..........

I guess you tried to turn the oil pump a little at a time until the gears on the cam mate to the # 1 position in the firing order
Yup, as long as you can rotate the body enough to time it without the vacuum can running into anything it won't matter.
Leave the rotor in the distributor(leave off the cap), I grab it and wiggle it around and sometimes it will grab the oil pump shaft and allow it to drop in fully. Not a big deal.
Whew......that was a long beer break. First that's for the replies. Went out tonight and dropped the distributor right where I wanted it. You think I would have learned that sometimes you "just need to walk away" and tackle it later, the old "trying too hard". I'll probably be asking some dumb question again as I'm getting close to dropping this motor in the truck. It's been a 2 year on/off project so I'm getting pretty nervous, hoping everything is in order. Tomorrow, pilot bearing, flywheel/clutch, bellhousing and I'll be trying to lift it back over the radiator support into the engine bay. Thanks to all you guys and the support to keep us old duffers going......Tater
