how would that tear off the front of the engine? I would assume it would just burn the belt....

The waterpump seized on my V12 BMW and it just toasted the belt.... there was a lot more contact area on that belt then on the vacuum pump...

I've never seen one do that, but all of mine have killed the bearing and then lost vacuum. Brakes start getting softer and I immediately drop a couple F bombs and choice cuss words and go straight to a parts store for another pump.. LOL

When it locked up it broke the top and bottom left bolt and bent the bottom right bolt. I had to tear the whole A/C braket off drill and heli coil the bolt holes.

Got anything in your mind for an idler to replace the vac pump?

Not really. I could probably make one pretty easily though. Either that or one could run SD accessories and brackets. That's going pretty great lengths to eliminate a stupid vacuum pump though. A shorter belt might work if it wraps the power steering and A/C compressor enough, but it doesn't look to me like it would wrap the A/C compressor enough to prevent slippage.

Nope you wouldn't get enough wrap if you just deleted the pump and went with a shorter belt.
SD accessories and brackets is waaaaaaaay too much work, There must be something out there to allow an idler to be installed in that location?

I've never looked for one. I'd be willing to bet though that I could take this smog delete pulley that I have on the shelf for a 5.0, modify the mount to fit the 3 bolt pattern, space out the pulley enough and put one of our idler pulleys on it. Should work just fine. The biggest issue would be spacing out the pulley correctly and making the mount work. Our bolt on idlers are easy to make work somewhere. Maybe even modify an A/C delete idler pulley..

just replaced my vacuum pump and the new (reman) one is already making some noise after just 1k miles. brakes are much better but who knows how long it'll last.

told myself i'm doing hydroboost when (not if) it goes again. for vacuum to the ac controls, though, any thoughts on whether tapping into the intake line between the air filter and turbo would work? i can feel good vacuum on the surface of my 6637 filter at idle and its gotta be even more once you get on the pedal. even if i had to step on the pedal to get my climate control to select properly, i'd be fine with that.

as for an idler replacement for the vacuum pump - i was just figuring i'd gut the pump itself, and keep the pulley, shaft and mount bracket. maybe replace the bearings with somethign better, but without the diaphram load on the back end, i bet the bearings woudl last quite a bit longer than when with the oscillating loads of the pump.

You'll have to run an electric vacuum pump.

But if the arbor was good on the vacuum pump, i'd order better bearings and do as you describe.

I was wondering about that myself. Someone could start a nice little cottage industry, collecting old pumps as cores and converting them into idlers. Better yet, a complete package - hydroboost conversion kit + electric vac pump for the 19th-Century HVAC + idler made from pump core.

so, the vacuum side of the turbo for sure won't produce enough 'suck' to run the climate controls? has anyone tried this/compared specs?

i am unconvinced that it would definitely not work - meaning, i still think it could be made to work.

I have an idea in mind... I need to get a good look at my old vac pump and see if my idea would work or not
