steering gear box

whats up guys......my question is how can i tell when my steering box has started to have more play. i also noticed that above the pitman arm there seems to be a slow leak from the gear box. how can i check to see if it is the steering box n not the linkage or vice versa. what is that screw with a lock nut on top of the steering box for ?? i put a wrench on it to see what size it was n its a 5/8. i didnt loosen it yet cuz i dont know what will happen. its a 94 f150 flareside. thanks for the help in advance.

The box is worn out when the output shaft does not move exactly in sync with the input shaft. IOW, if you turn the steering wheel back and forth slightly, the Pittman arm should move proportionally. If it doesn't, the internals are worn and messing with the preload adjustment won't fix the problem.
