Ok guys I had to do some serious work on my truck i had to put a new flywheel ring gear on the flywheel. I knew the stock tanks were shot and I put new tank on the bed and ran all new lines. I have e-pump ran in line where the stock fuel water seprator used to be cause it was leaking air along time ago. I ran all new lines from the e-pump back to the new tank. The return lines have all been replaced with in the last 3 years as i did the headgaskets and did those when i pulled heads.
So the truck runs fine then it starts to studder and surge. I purge it at the filter and lots of air comes out for a sec or two then its fine. Rev it up let it run for a min or two and it starts to stumble on itself. I dont know where else it could it be sucking air from cause i would think you would see a fuel leak after the e-pump since it is pressurized.
What do you guys think or where do you think it could be sucking air from or is it the IP or injectors??? I have to drive it like this until I get it fixed so all the help would be very helpful. Thx guys.
did you use an e-pump designed to pull fuel?
did you bypass the stock lift pump or is the e-pump just on a switch and or with glow plugs for priming only?
you ran new lines from the tank.meaning you only have one tank now? no selector valve that could have failed? what about the pickup tube condition? iv got a rusty one on the back that iv never fixed after spending $ for a new selector valve and a new tank lmao! i guess sometime here,i'll have to jb-weld the tube so i can finally use that tank.get ready for summer blend fuel and fuel up when i see i can save a few pennies anyway.
but check your selector valve and tank pickup.after the e-pump she'd just leak fuel not sputter.the issue is before it.
no selector valve only one tank now and it is a transfer tank on the flatbed. now all new lines from tank to the e pump is pulling fuel and it will squirt the fuel a few feet out of the truck. No air what so ever from come out the other side of the epump. I hook the line back up to the epump and then purge at the filter and it is like half air half fuel. I dont see anyfuel leaking but im going to go double check. I dont see how it can be sucking air and not leaking fuel on the pressure side of the epump. There is only two lines left to replace the one from the epump to the stock hard line on the front crossmember and the lil hose on the factory liftpump. The epump is on switch. Im going to go run the jus the epump and look for leaks again now cause i dont know what else it could be.
If you put in a different tank is it got the return line check valve? If not it will draw all the fuel out of the lines, And the check valve has to be below the fuel level at all times.
well looks like ill be dropping the tanks and pulling that out of the tank cause i did not know that was in the tank or needed to be on the end of the return line. I hope that fixes my problem cause mine is just a straight hose to the new tank.
put the check valve on the end of the new return line after running the truck for about 10 min i get air again out of the valve by the filter and have to purge it and rev it up to keep it running then it does it again after after a few min.
The check valve that i took out of the tank was not below the level of the fuel it was right under the top of the sending unit.... should i put a piece of hose on it and run it the bottom of the tank???
I check all the run turn lines and they are not leaking fuel. I have one leaky injector, it leaks right under where the nut for the hard line screws on to the injector. I replaced all the return lines caps orings and clamps when i did the head gaskets 2 years ago. Do you think it could be one of those return lines?
I can't see that the return line would have to go to the bottom. You can see in my pic above that factory it only went about 3/4s of the way down. Maybe if there was no check valve then it'd make sense to go all the way.
Just throwing a couple of things out there, but is the new tank vented? It should be if it's not. Is the pump malfunctioning? Is it correct for the engine's needs??
My check valve leaks if I go below 12.5 gallons of fuel, I get air intrusion too if I shut it off... and let me tell ya it happens FAST! I can get fuel and it will suck all the fuel out so I never go below a 1/2 tank,Or just keep it running well fueling as I do most times ...When I drop mine I will be moving it to just above the bottom of the tank
If you have standard worm type hose clamps you should double them up one screw up and one 90* right next to it,Worm clamps are not good at sealing a vacuum.
OH and another thing did you change the O rings on the fuel pick up tube they might be leaking too.
I FIXED IT!!! i feel kinda stupid but it was one of the fittings i put on the epump i didnt put plumbers tape on is where it was sucking air. did the clear hose trick to find it. thx guys for the help
