LOL, trust me, the stock tangerine (for a car engine) or the truck Alpine Green would look like hammered dog mess in a blue truck... There goes my Purist title, eh?
....and what's wrong with a green engine in a blue truck???
Ross, I'd take a hard look at the T5. 5th gear makes for nice hiway cruising, but you can still leave it in 4th around town for good performance. If you used the original shifter stick, no one would even know.
Go for it Ross. I mean, what the heck, you've already started down that slippery slope with those wild engine colors. Might as well make it highway worthy (don't worry, I won't mention to anyone about that crazy aftermarket bass thumping stereo you mounted in there....our little secret)
generally I'm not an enabler, but I got to say Ross I LOVE the T-5 swap. I'm more than willing to lend any knowledge from my experience, but frankly if you read my parts gathering thread and have a teeny bit of mechanical experience you wont need help it's very easy and straightforward.
ross, just curious what oil brand and weight you plan to use in your new rebuild. are you going to add ZDDP, if so in what form? we (my buddy neil with me handing him tools) are redoing my engine this winter / spring also. awaiting word from the machine shop so we can order a bunch of parts and get going. i think i've read this whole thread but if you already answered those questiion, just give me a "duh". dick r.
For a stock flathead, I am convinced that high ZDDP isn't a necessity. This is my old cam, running on newly surfaced Johnsons (lightweight), plenty of assembly lube. Stock flatheads don't have high valve spring pressures. So I'm running some 10w30 for the first couple hundred miles. Nothing fancy.
thanks for the info, ross. we're putting in a new cam, so we'll go with recommendation of the cam co., but i'm def going with the 10w30. can't wait to get our block back and get started. cruising season is about here in the NE.
