As most of you know, I did what turned out to be a V/B spring swap on my X. the rake still didn't suit me, so I have in my possession the 4" rear blocks and u-bolts to put in if it ever gets warmer/drier around here. My question is two fold, which shocks to replace my ProComps? Bilsteins?(which ones Heavy Dutys or 5100 series) And since it has 250/350 springs under it with 4" blocks, should I get the shocks for an '01 F350 SRW? Thanks in advance.
Monty
Everyone says Bilstein here...I like to go against the trends and I put rancho 7000s on my old truck. Really like them. Going on my new truck as soon as I get the funds

Did you end up higher in the front and that's why you're adding the blocks?
Or did you want more rake and so you're adding the blocks?

Did you do the "b-mod"?
Thanks!

Yes, front higher than rear with a rear down look. Only 1.25" and I did not "mod" the B's. Just put them on the stock X blocks. That is why I am putting the 4" blocks under it. I can't stand rear lower than front. I believe my shocks will be long enough, but have been on for 100k miles but are still working. Just wanted to change them out as I try to never go over 100k even if they are ok. I usually try to change at 75k intervals, but with these working, just never did.
I went with rancho 9K's because of a rebate and their adjustability. If I don't like the ride I turn a ****. If I am towing I turn them up, if I am taking the X by itself for a trip I turn them down for a caddy type ride.
The main thing I am wondering, if I go with Bilsteins, I wonder if I can buy the X "lifted" shocks, or F350 shocks? For that matter, I guess that would apply to any shock. If I reason it correctly, I guess the F350 shocks front and rear would give me the length I need to keep from damaging the shocks when they are extended instead of buying the stock Excursion shocks.
i could be wrong but i do believe that the f350 shocks have enough length to extend a little further than the normal operating stock range. you shouldnt have an issue deviating slightly from its normal range but thats just my speculations. ive been told for certain that some shocks have this ability but cant remember the exact one
My choice when I mod mine will be 5100's for lifted X. The Excursion weight distribution is different from p/u so valving should be different. Your rear weighs more than empty bed F350 does. jmo
Good luck!

I hear you on the rake. I don't like the rear lower either.
Just curious, but why the blocks instead of the "b mod"? Would the b mod spring be too stiff for you?

No. It would not be too stiff. I just had a very limited time in the shop when changing them is the main reason I didn't mod them. Hind sight is 20/20! Now I will just put the blocks under it. I am EXTREMELY satisfied with the ride and how it tows. Just not too happy with the rake.
Wex, good idea on the valving. It will be ones for a lift X then which ever I choose. Thanks
Always had good luck with the Bilstein 5100's and thats where I'm going next time around. They were the only shock that would handle the expansion joints on the highway in my Cummins 2500, even as a brand new truck she would get into a rythm and just hop along the highway until I put 5100's under it, problem gone.....

Well, I have the Bilsteins (cannot recall which ones though. Guess I could look back through my threads to see..) under my Ex, and Rancho 9000s under my p/u. The ride is similar in both vehicles, and I do not know which setting my Ranchos are at. I have not yet tried to turn the ***** on my Ranchos because they look shady. They look like they may break if I go to turn 'em.
