Nice X!

One has to wonder when the X population will run out and it will start to be impossible to find an X for sale.

Got a Excursion

Congratulations!!

I bought my first EX three years ago, a 2001 7.3 4X4. It had 199K miles at the time and I'm pushing 275K miles now.

In the early stages of ownership I had to shake out a few electical issues, sensors mostly. After that, my '01 EX has been the most useful vehicle I've owned.

I love the space and need it for my work. I drive 25K miles/year and the EX with a 7.3 just runs and runs - I get 21mpg highway.

Sure wish they still made these with a diesel!

Good luck!

The limited slip in this Excursion is trashed. I am going to replace it. I was thinking a Detroit Trutrac. What do you guys recommend?

I thought that I would give an update on my Excursion. I have repaired many things and have a few to go.

I have repaired the following:

1. Windshield leaked and was replaced
2. Rear hatch would not lock - greased actuator
3. Rear vent window leaking - turned out to be seam weld on top - silicone fixed
4. Rear LS differential locked up - replaced with Detroit Trutrac along with gears
5. Replaced rear drive shaft u-joints - fixed vibration some
6. Rear A/C would not cool - Replaced rear expansion valve
7. Rancho 9000xl shocks

Getting done next week:
1. Readhead steering box
2. Hellwig rear sway bar
3. Replacing front leaf springs with stock replacements - I do not want any lift because of garage height limitations.

So this is my list so far: It has been lots of work, but the truck is coming along nicely.

I have the v/b springs in my 2000 and it fits in a standard hight garage just fine, the springs and rear sway bar are the best mods you can do for an Ex IMO.

Red head in the 05 a month ago in the wife's truck, good mod as well.

Along with new u-joints, did you have the shaft balanced?

No I did not have the driveshaft balanced, but I am taking it to the transmission shop to get a leak checked out, and I will have them do it. The sway bar, Redhead, and springs are installed now. Wow, this truck drives really nice. Thanks all for the help.

Update on my Excursion

Well the alternator and transmission have been added to the list. The leak in the transmission was because it was overheating and blowing fluid out of the vent tube. Also, they found a crack in the case. So today I get my truck back. This thing has been in the shop more than its not been. I have only driven 2000 miles on it since March. This is really getting frustrating!

I have now repaired the following:

8. Readhead steering box
9. Hellwig rear sway bar
10. Replaced front leaf springs with stock replacements - I did not want any lift because of garage height limitations.
11. Total transmission rebuild
12. Alternator

Yep, but NOW you have a superb truck with most everything fixed!! My Ex has 160k on it now I think, so I love to see those that have 200k and 300k+ still going! And I have done ball joints, transmission (JOHN WOODS is the BEST, Thanks Stewart!) tie-rods, brakes and so on.
We ordered it, and when we went to pick it up in 02, it was almost $48k, and as I am fond of saying about my older trucks, "they ain't makin any more of them!"
Glad ya got it all fixed up, now enjoy driving it!

the perks of buying a used truck, at least now the truck will go another 200k

That is awesome. Someone must have really been up on the maintenance on that EX. Hopefully I will not have to do much more to mine for a while.

hard to tell as I got it at a shady "buy here pay here" lot...but for the price and condition of the interior alone...(and the fact that it clearly doesnt have any egr cooler or head gasket issues at the moment)...felt like a bargain.

im going to replace pretty much everything under it just because I simply dont trust anything with that many miles and no documented service history :lol

Wow, congratulations on doing all that to your truck! I hadn't kept track of this thread, but you didnt waste any time. Like others said, you should be good to go now for like the next 200,000 miles!

Enjoy!
