2005 Navi - outside mirrors

Having an issue with both outside mirrors. Apparently they are supposed to move position when the truck is put in reverse, and return to position when it is in Drive. Not so much - the movement is inconsistent, and they never return to the "drive" position.

Also, the power fold does not work (or only works inconsistently). Sometimes one mirror folds, sometimes both, most times neither.

The mirror glass position can be adjusted with the switch with no problem. Wondering if there is something I can do short of replacing the mirrors (at $400+ each!! ).

Many thanks!

You may take the side mirrors off and clean the connections & motor inside. Trying to make them work is better than replacing for $400 each.

REVERSE TILT MIRROR SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS AND REPAIR

FORD:
2003-2004 Expedition

LINCOLN:
2003-2004 Navigator

ISSUE
This TSB consolidates previous special service messages (SSM's) on reverse tilt mirrors. This information is intended to aid technicians in diagnosing the system and avoiding unnecessary repairs.

ACTION
Refer to the following Service Procedure to identify and repair reverse tilt mirror system concerns.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

All 2003-2004 Navigators, and some 2003-2004 Expeditions, built before 12/1/2003, were equipped with an automatic reverse tilt-down mirror system. This feature automatically tilts the mirror down when the vehicle is placed in reverse, then tilts the mirror back up when the vehicle is shifted out of reverse. The position that the mirror returns to is ALWAYS the position that the mirror was in immediately before the vehicle was placed in reverse. The feature can be enabled or disabled using the message center. This feature was deleted from Expedition/Navigator on 12/1/2003, and is no longer available.

Some vehicles equipped with this feature may exhibit one or both of the following conditions. To successfully diagnose and repair, it is important to accurately identify which of the following conditions is present.

^ Condition 1: The mirror does not return to the pre-reverse position. Affects vehicles built before 2/22/2003 only.

^ Condition 2: The mirror moves erratically when using the memory recall button or key transmitter. The mirror may move to the full outboard position and continue to ratchet, or it may not maintain position. Affects vehicles built before 6/3/2003 only.

NOTE IT IS NORMAL FOR THE MIRROR TO BRIEFLY RATCHET WHEN IT REACHES THE END OF ITS TRAVEL. DO NOT CONFUSE THIS NORMAL FUNCTION WITH A MIRROR THAT CONTINUES TO RATCHET, AS DESCRIBED IN CONDITION 2. IF A BRIEF RATCHETING IS THE CUSTOMER'S ONLY COMPLAINT, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR.

TO RESOLVE CONDITION 1

1. Replace the DSM with 4L1Z-14C708-BA (Expedition) or 4L7Z-14C708-BA (Navigator).

2. Perform programmable module installation (PMI) on the replaced DSM, using WDS or NGS+.

NOTE NGS CANNOT BE USED TO CONFIGURE THE DSM, BUT CAN BE USED FOR ALL OTHER DSM DIAGNOSTICS.

NOTE IF A "DATA ERROR" MESSAGE IS ENCOUNTERED IN THE MESSAGE CENTER AFTER REPLACING THE MODULE, THE DSM HAS BEEN INCORRECTLY PROGRAMMED. DO NOT REPLACE THE DSM AGAIN IF THIS OCCURS, THERE IS NOT A FAULT WITH THE DSM. REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE PROCEDURE BELOW.

RESOLVE THE "DATA ERROR" ISSUE USING WDS

1. Disable the DSM by removing fuses 1.3 and 1.109.

2. Close all existing sessions on WDS and start a new session by selecting 16 Pin All Except Those Below, etc.

3. Select Toolbox Tab, Module Programming, Programmable Module Installation, then DSM.

4. When the WDS says, "Install New Module", reinstall the fuses, follow the screen prompts to cycle key on, and then press the check mark.

5. When the explanation screen indicates "As-Built Data Will Need To Be Entered", press the check mark.

6. WDS will then ask for A2-01 data, which can be obtained on the P15 Website under: Service Publications, As-Built, Call As-Built; then submit the VIN.

7. Enter the appropriate As-Built data and press the check mark, WDS should display "Module Configuration Successful".

RESOLVE THE "DATA ERROR" ISSUE USING NGS+

1. Select Diagnostic Data link, DSM, Module Configuration Programming.

2. Select Programmable Module Installation.

3. Select DSM if prompted to select a module.

4. Pick "Retrieve Backup Data" and then enter "4253" Security Code Number.

5. Enter VIN if prompted.

6. Enter vehicle data (Obtain From The PTS Website: select Service Publications, As-Built, call As-Built, submit VIN).

7. Enter DSM data A2-01 from the As-Built Data then press "Store".

8. Select "NO" when asked "DOES THE AS-BUILT DATA LIST A2-02".

9. Select "RESTORE MODULE CONFIG-NEW ECU".

10. NGS+ should display "Module Data Download Successful".

Always verify the proper operation of the mirrors after configuring the DSM, and make sure the system is enabled in the message center. Also be sure to obtain all remote transmiffers (Fobs) from the customer prior to service, and program the transmiffers and memory set buttons to customer preference after replacing the DSM. The procedure for programming the transmiffers and memory set buttons is outlined in the Owner Guide.

TO RESOLVE CONDITION 2

1. While the concern is occurring, measure resistance at C311 between pins 8-4 and 8-5 (right hand mirror) and 8-7 and 8-9 (left hand mirror).

NOTE DO NOT REPOSITION THE MIRROR USING THE MIRROR ADJUSTMENT SWITCH ON THE DOOR TRIM PANEL. THIS WILL CAUSE THE RESISTANCE TO DROP TO WITHIN SPECIFICATION AND THE CONCERN WILL BE TEMPORARILY RESOLVED.

a. If the reading is more than 4.7 K ohms, the mirror motor should be replaced with 3L1Z-17D696-AA. Apply Motorcraft Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound XG-3-A to the female side of C622 (R) and C516 (L).

NOTE REPLACE ONLY THE MOTOR. DO NOT REPLACE THE ENTIRE MIRROR ASSEMBLY.

b. If the resistance reading is less than 4.7 K ohms, check connectors C311, C341D, C622, and C516 for proper seating, pin push outs, etc. Also, look for shorts or damaged wires in the harness at the power side view mirror switch, the memory seat switches, and the power door lock actuator and switch (all located on the door trim panel).

(1) If there are no faults with the wiring and connectors, replace the motor with 3L1Z-17D696-AA. Apply Motorcraft Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound XG-3-A to the female side of C622 (R) and C516 (L).

NOTE DO NOT APPLY EXCESSIVE GREASE, THIS MAY DAMAGE THE PINS.

Most people just disable the feature and call it a day. Ford got rid of it because it was problematic. You have an 05, it doesn't sound like it was even offered in 05 so you may have a different issue.
