I went to one of the premier ford 4x4 shops in my town to buy a used 9 inch housing. After I bought it I took it down to have it sand blasted and powdercoated. Next I took it to a mechanic to have it and my lockers installed. Well two weeks after they were supposed to start on it they finaly got going on it. Yesterday I get a call from the mechanic and guess what, The rearend that the 4x4 shop sold me, is the wrong one, powder coating and all.
Do you guys know if a 1979 bronco takes a special rear end??
yes, It was too short/long I dont rember and the nubs were in the wrong place. I have the 4x4 shop heading over to the mechanic today to check things out.
It should use the same rear axle as any fullsize pickup or Bronco from the late 60's to '96, but more specifically, the Ford 9". Maybe they sold you a '66-77 Bronco axle.
I now that a 79 bronco has much longer axels (wider housing) the a 71 f-100 hundred does
there where some variations, but it seems like you could get another set of axels, maybe move the perches and you should be good to go
The rear axle under the Bronco was rolled over to the Ford 8.8 somewhere in the late 80's maybe even '89, don't recall exactly. So nothing newer than that vintage for the 9" rear. Otherwise any 9" from a full size Bronco or F-series from 78 through about 89 should work just fine.
The 8.8" appeared in FS trucks in ~'83, and the 9" died in '86 because they didn't want to redesign it for the ABS sensor that appeared in '87. But they're interchangeable, and the 8.8" is just as strong or stronger than the 9".
