zeroing the deck

Whats the most I can take off my 460 block to bring the quench where it needs to be. Depending if I go hyper or forged, im looking at .016-.018" from top of piston to deck. I have the 10.300" deck.

First off, unless the block was previous decked, the 10.300" is a nominal number. That is, if the block was shorter than this during machining by Ford, it was discarded. Usually the deck height is over the nominal figure whether it is a 10.300, 10.310 or 10.320 deck height block.

Decking the block between .010 and .020 usually doesn't cause any alignment problems of the heads and intake.

I said 10.300 as everything I always read was for the 68-70 blocks, they had the short deck. The later ones were raised. Any info would be great.

Measure it before you do anything. As Larry points out, who knows what or where its at now. Measure both sides. Then, with the measurement in hand, use the compression height of your pistons and gasket thickness to determine how far in the hole you want it to be. Some people like a zero deck, but leaving a little offers some room to true it up for another rebuild.

Ok I want to use either the trw 535 hyper pistons or the 2404f forged pistons. The hyper as you know has 2 reliefs while the forged is dished. The forged would leave me with .016 I think from the top if its truly 10.300, the hyper would be .018". The hyper is going to be over 10.6:1 Im guessing without me touching the deck, while the forged is going to still be under 10. I want to keep this thing on pump gas as well. Ive read lots on quench, so what should I do here?

The 10.6:1 C/R depends on your heads and cam. A lot of people run 11.0:1 with clean combustion chamber iron heads, a long duration cam and reasonable ignition advance. 10.0:1 shouldn't be any problem at all.

ask to have your block mocked and decked. That is where they put a piston in all four corners of the block and measure the depth in the cylinder. Mine was so far out of whack it wasn't funny. I know have a TPD of .010, I was .043, .047, .035, and .033 take about throwing all of you cylinders off. But make sure they do that only after you have the mains line bored. Other wise you may be off a bit.
