I am almost done with the 223 - 390 swap into my 61 F-350. The starter off the 390 we used does not fully engage the flywheel. The parts guys don't know which starter to use. Does anyone know. The bellhousing # is 6g27.
Thanks for the reply, but the guy doing most of the work found out what I needed. Turns out we needed to go to a larger flywheel and clutch. Had like a 12" and went to a 13" clutch and larger diameter flywheel. Then the starter that came with the 390 would work.
The bellhousing was off some larger vehicle that mated an FE to a T98 with the wing mounts.
Well, we are stumped again... the flywheel did not fit. Seems it was meant for a 391? The mounting bolts are all just off a tad.
So, does anyone know if there is a flywheel starter combo to fit a 76' 390 to a T98 4 speed. The bellhousing fits fine, so there must be a flywheel starter that will work. This is a bellhousing that has the wing tranny mounts.
I have been told that I might need a flywheel that has the bevel on the back side and use a starter with a bendix that pulls back, like the 223 did.
Turns out we went a new route for the starter. Took the bellhousing out of the truck and took it to a machine shop. They are going to modify the bellhousing to accept the standard 3 bolt starter for the 390. They are going to re-drill the top and bottom holes and add metal and re-drill the outer hole. This will position the starter closer to the flywheel and this will allow it to mesh correctly.
